What would 2C of global warming actually mean for us? Why is the climate system so fragile? Why is biodiversity so valuable to humans? Environmental science can be very complicated, but a solid understanding of its basics can help put into perspective how climate change affects us, how serious it is, and what can be done about it. Here is our selection of the seven best, must-read and accessible books on environmental science.

Written for non-scientists, Gaia changed conventional opinions on how organic matter interacts with the environment. Lovelock dissects the compelling evidence that makes the Gaia hypothesis credible, as well as making several predictions that have since proven true. Gaia presents readers the science that proves the Earth is a living, complex, and fragile thing, and makes an impassioned case for its protection.

What Wilson sets out is not only a realistic plan to protect global biodiversity, it is perhaps the best explainer for why we need to do this. Thriving biodiversity is essential to a thriving human civilisation, and avoiding biological extinction is critical if we want to avoid our own. Wilson provides a detailed scientific underpinning for his proposal, while also impassionately calling for the preservation of the natural world, making this our pick for one of the best books on environmental science.

While Walden dabbles in the philosophy of simplicity, interlinked throughout the story is a smart and at times groundbreaking ecological analysis. Thoreau performed and articulated a detailed and poetic scientific examination of plant and animal life, accurately describing the behaviour of water bodies and understanding how seasons influenced the local climate and ecology. Walden is seminal for the time it was written in, and how it masterfully interlinked science with poetry and human emotion. It is one of the first, and best, books that artfully describe how humans can live sustainably with nature, and how the two can help each other thrive.

The journal aims to provide a comprehensive and relevant forum that unites the diverse communities and disciplines conducting water research relevant to engineered systems and the built environment. This includes fundamental science geared toward understanding physical, chemical, and biological phenomena in these systems as well as applied research focused on the development and optimisation of engineered treatment, management, and supply strategies.

Papers in this area are strongly discouraged from focusing solely on technology demonstrations in model systems with model pollutant targets. Rather, they are encouraged to consider performance in complex (that is, environmentally relevant) systems and performance metrics (for example, efficacy across multiple pollutant targets, longevity, regeneration during application, and sustainability assessment) most relevant to real world application.

Original research papers on any of the subjects outlined in the scope section and related areas are encouraged and welcomed. All papers should give due attention to overcoming limitations and to underlying principles. All contributions will be judged on the following four criteria.

1. Novelty and insight

2. Quality of scientific work and content

3. Clarity of objectives and aims of the work

4. Appropriateness of length to content of new science

Critical reviews must be a critical evaluation of the existing state of knowledge on a particular facet of water research or water technologies as they affect environmental science. They should be timely and provide insights based on existing literature. They should be of general interest to the journal's wide readership.

Authors are encouraged to include line numbering in submitted manuscripts. Although there is no page limit for Full papers, appropriateness of length to content of new science will be taken into consideration by reviewers.

Environmental Science: Processes & Impacts publishes high quality papers in all areas of the environmental chemical sciences, including chemistry of the air, water, soil and sediment. We welcome studies on the environmental fate and effects of anthropogenic and naturally occurring contaminants, both chemical and microbiological, as well as related natural element cycling processes.

We also welcome high impact field studies, particularly those that are broad enough to define occurrence baselines or long term trends, identify new contaminants, or those that enrich our molecular-level understanding of environmental systems.

Environmental Science: Processes & Impacts also invites papers that bridge between environmental chemistry and sustainability topics, such as life cycle assessment, materials flow analysis, and environmental decision making.

Papers that are focused primarily on water engineering and treatment technologies or on the environmental behaviour of engineered nanomaterials would be better suited to our sister journals, Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology and Environmental Science: Nano. See more details about the scopes of the Environmental Science journals.

Critical reviews must be a critical evaluation of the existing state of knowledge on a particular facet of environmental science. They should be timely and provide insights based on existing literature. They should be of general interest to the journal's wide readership. All Critical reviews undergo a rigorous and full peer review procedure, in the same way as regular research papers.

All submitted manuscripts must include an Environmental Significance Statement (120 words maximum) that should categorically state how the work provides immediate insight to environmental processes and impacts. This statement will be seen by the reviewers and will help ascertain the relevance of the article for a broad but technical audience and authors should use it to show that they have given serious consideration to problems that are environmental in nature. If the paper is accepted this statement will also be published. Manuscripts cannot be reviewed without this statement.

Authors are encouraged to include line numbering in submitted manuscripts. Article titles in the references should be included. Although there is no page limit for Full papers, appropriateness of length to content of new science will be taken into consideration by reviewers.

Authors must provide an 'Environmental Significance Statement' (120 words maximum) that states how the work provides insight into environmental processes in natural environments and/or the impacts of human activities on ecosystems and human health. This statement should be different from the abstract and set the work in broader context with regards to environmental science. It should aim to answer the following questions.

The oxidation of substituted phenols, anilines, and various related electron shuttle compounds (ranging from biogenic dihydroxybenzenes to natural organic matter) is a major determinant of their environmental fate and effects. Describing the kinetics of these reactions with QSARs is useful for explaining the relative reactivity of important congener families (e.g. precursors to disinfection byproducts), or predicting oxidation rates for chemicals of emerging concern (e.g. metabolites of insensitive munitions compounds). Applications of our QSARs for oxidation by manganese oxide, or further development of QSARs for other environmental oxidants (ozone, triplet natural organic matter, etc.) will be improved by the new measured and calculated oxidation potentials presented here. 0852c4b9a8
