After the ruling House of Medici died out, their art collections were given to the city of Florence under the famous Patto di famiglia negotiated by Anna Maria Luisa, the last Medici heiress. The Uffizi is one of the first modern museums. The gallery had been open to visitors by request since the sixteenth century, and in 1769 it was officially opened to the public, formally becoming a museum in 1865.[5]

The building of the Uffizi complex was begun by Giorgio Vasari in 1560 for Cosimo I de' Medici as a means to consolidate his administrative control of the various committees, agencies, and guilds established in Florence's Republican past so as to accommodate them all one place, hence the name uffizi, "offices". The construction was later continued by Alfonso Parigi and Bernardo Buontalenti; it was completed in 1581. The top floor was made into a gallery for the family and their guests and included their collection of Roman sculptures.[6]

Over two million visitors visited the Uffizi in 2016, making it the most visited art gallery in Italy.[14] At peak periods (particularly in July), waiting times for entry can be up to five hours. Advance tickets can be bought online, to significantly reduce the waiting time.[9] In 2018 a revised ticketing system was introduced to reduce queuing times to just minutes.[15]

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the museum was closed for 150 days in 2020, and attendance plunged by 72 percent to 659,043. Nonetheless, the Uffizi was twenty-seventh in the list of most-visited art museums in the world in 2020.[16] Works from the Uffizi gallery collection are now available for remote viewing on Google Arts and Culture.[17] The museum reopened in May 2021 following a renovation that included an addition of 14 new rooms and a display of additional 129 artworks, with the museum attempting to give more voice to historically under-represented groups including women and people of color.[18]

The Uffizi Gallery showcases masterpieces from renowned artists. Due to its popularity, the gallery can get crowded, especially in peak season, resulting in long lines. Thankfully, your timed entry tickets prevent this hassle. A set number of visitors are allowed in at once, so you can skip the ticket line, trade your voucher for physical tickets, and swiftly enter. Despite some potential waiting, it's much quicker than the regular entry. After voucher exchange and security check, you can simply walk right in!

Your tickets allow you reserved access into the gallery, however, there may be a short wait at the ticket counter at Door Number 3 where you will have to exchange your mobile voucher for the physical ticket. You can then gain entry at Door number 1 through the "People with Reservation Entry" after going through a mandatory security check.

The top floor was turned into a private gallery for the amusement of the ruling family of Florence, friends and guests. Here in this gallery were displayed paintings, statues, jewelry, scientific instruments and weapons transforming it into a very interesting and precious collection in the world.

Did you know that with the extinction of the Medici family in the XVIII century, Florence became part of the Austrian empire and the pieces of art that were inside the gallery were almost transferred to Vienna? It was the last duchess, Ana Maria who declared in her will the desire to donate to Florence these wonderful collections. In this way the gallery was opened during the XVI century to the visitors under request and in 1769 opened its doors to the public as a museum.

If you are not particularly a fan of museums, and in your visit to Florence you want to choose one or two, visit the Uffizi Gallery because is the most important art gallery of Italy and one of the most prestigious in the world.

The Palazzo degli Uffizi is one of the most famous and oldest museums in the world and this beautiful Uffizi Museum can be found in Florence Italy. The Uffizi used to be a palace owned by the Medici banking family. The palace is located next to the Palazzo Vecchio and had a function for the government. The Uffizi was built between 1560-1580 by order of Grand Duke Cosimo I de Medici by Giorgio Vasari to house the administrative and legal offices of Florence. Cosimo's son, Francesco, first turned the upper floor of the palace into an art gallery. After this, this collection was more and more enriched into the large museum it is today.

A further goal of the project will be to launch a new collaborative relationship between the Uffizi and IU's newly named Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art that could include mutual loans of works of art, the development of temporary joint exhibitions and the creation of new virtual gallery tours.

I have always loved this painting since I was a child and had no idea that it was in the Uffizi Gallery so you can imagine my surprise when I saw it. This is another Uffizi gallery must see

Compiling this post made me look at the works I enjoyed spending a bit more time enjoying what made them special. When you walk through a gallery this big I find that things tend to blur a little. It is an assault on the senses to be surrounded by so many significant Uffizi Gallery artworks.

There are also hundreds of sculptures on display that I merely glanced at. Over and above that the interior demands attention with its magnificent painted ceilings. If you like art you could happily lose yourself in the gallery and like most significant museums one visit is never enough.

To see the main gallery, purchase the Uffizi single ticket or the Passepartout 5 Days ticket (for more flexibility). The other two tickets, the Palazzo Pitti and Giardino di Boboli tickets, allow entry to the Palazzo Pitti collections and the Boboli Gardens only.

If, on the other hand, you want to take a shorter visit and see only the best of the collection, the most famous masterpieces are on display on the second floor. At the end of the second floor gallery there is a quick exit.

We finish in the Uffizi gallery. You can stay and enjoy it longer if you wish. There is a roof top bar with lovely views. If you are doing the small shared group David tour after, you need to be on time for that at 4.45

I had a really interesting and fun tour of the Uffizi gallery in Florence with a company called Artviva. We were escorted to the gallery by a young guide who is a native speaker of English and were able to gain entry without the usual interminable wait in the queue.

Having visited the gallery before, I know it is a vaste repository of wonderful paintings and sculptures. But you can wear out an awful lot of shoe leather trying to find the really good stuff and even then you might not realise what you are looking at. Our guide on the other hand knew just where to take us and was full of entertaining stories about the artists and their work. There were some children in our group who were kept interested with questions to answer with a treasure hunt style quiz. They seemed to really enjoy the tour as much as the adults. After our tour we were free to keep exploring the gallery for as long as we wished

Booked small group tour for Friday 01st March at 13.30. Meeting point changed, but when we phoned to query they answered phone immediately and the tour guide came to us. It was only the two of us on the tour so we were spoilt. No queue to get in, quickly through security and into the gallery. Pier Carlo Testa our guide was an English lady who was a wealth of information. She made the tour very interesting with little snipets of information bringing the paintings to life. On the 1st Sunday of each month entrance to the galleries is free, which may account for why it was quiet on the Friday. When we walked past the gallery on Sunday the queue was horrendous, it was like the queue for day tickets at Wimbledon tennis. e24fc04721
