Increment Your Impact
Impact++ is a student-run organization at the University Of Washington (UW), Seattle, that champions the intersection of computer science in the social good space both on campus and in our communities! To maximize our efforts, we operate under a three-pronged structure!
The primary wing of Impact++ are the technical projects that we complete with our affiliate partners that range from assisting corporate social good efforts to driving digital transformations of global non-profits. Teams of 5-7 developers are led by technical project mangers to find innovative ways to contribute in the fields of human rights, open source software, education, and healthcare. Another key aspect of our organization is our Community Committee that seeks to break down notions of CS as an ivory tower, and raise awareness to its ability to positively impact our communities - targeting both students and the general public. Fostering a space for creative dialogue and discussion, each academic quarter is themed with special topics (for which workshops, outreach, and speaker events are organized). Lastly, we organize an annual hackathon, the Impact Innovation Challenge, that focuses on inspiring our local collegiate community to apply the skills they've learned in class to the social issues they find most pressing. Hosted every winter quarter, this hackathon is open for all college students in the greater Seattle area. Due to COVID restrictions, this year’s is virtual! In January 2018, a group of Computer Science students at the University of Washington got in touch with Microsoft's Hack for Good program and began volunteering on one of their software projects that was developing a data management tool for the King County Sheriff's Air Support Unit. After several months of progress, a number of individuals came together to form a board and help grow the one project into a full-fledged student-run organization called Impact++. By June of the same year, we had gathered a second project team to volunteer with another Hack for Good project partnered with the Grace Children's Foundation.
As the club continued to grow and gather interest on the University of Washington campus, the officers were looking for ways to engage with a larger audience of students. Fueled by this initiative in October 2018, Impact++ set out to host a hackathon. We reached out to local non-profit organizations to discover their technical needs and converted these into "Problem Statements" that we handed out to every participant in the Impact Innovation Challenge on May 4th, 2019.
Since then we have launched several new projects and begun work on the 2020 incarnation of our Impact Innovation Challenge. We hope to continue to grow our influence on campus for many years to come.
