During the Fall 2021 Semester, my mechanical design class (MEEN 210) was given a project to first use a 3D Scanner to scan a student's face (Due to COVID-19 Rules, I was unable to use the 3D Scanners. Instead, I watched as our class's TA scanned a face).
Given a STL model of the head, I was tasked to design a pair of VR Goggles that could comfortably fit while looking aesthetically pleasing and functionally sound. The curve on the "eye side" of the goggles were specifically designed to fit the head shape and size given.
Design Requirements
- Must form around the forehead of the head and have enough straps to form around the head
- Must be able to fit multiple sized mobile phones while making sure phone is safely secured
- Must have a cutout for the nose and eyes
- No exposed fasteners other than hooks for head straps (i.e. no screws, rings, etc.)
Execution
Step 1
After importing the STL file from the 3D Scanner into Solidworks, I measured various parts of the head to gain an understanding of the shape, size, and contouring of the head
Step 2
I hand drew a potential design and decided the preliminary critical dimensions
Step 3
I started to draft my design on CAD and continued to refine it. I assembled the goggles many times to make sure the cover clips, and head band clips fit as intended.
