The UCL MAPS Hackathon is a two-day problem solving competition organised by the Postgraduate Physics Society (PhySoc) for PhD students in the MAPS faculty, including Physics & Astronomy, Chemistry, Maths, Earth Sciences, and Space & Climate Physics departments at UCL. It is a great opportunity to develop skills in a fun environment.
The MAPS Hackathon 2018 will be held on Monday-Tuesday 25-26th June in the Jeremy Bentham Room (UCL).
A hackathon is traditionally a team based computer programming competition. Our hackathon is very similar, although it has a slightly wider scope as we offer a range of projects for teams to undertake, some of which include device building.
Unlike a PhD, where projects are often long and open-ended, the Hackathon focuses on collaborative problem solving skills under time-limited conditions. Participants will be assigned to well-rounded teams of four or five students, and will choose one of a selection of projects to work on together for two days (for examples, see the previous Hackathons).
The Hackathon is also an excellent opportunity to meet people from other parts of UCL, and if you build something really great together it's also good for your CV!
At the end of the competition, each team will deliver a short presentation about their project. Prizes will be available for the teams judged to have performed the best.
Prizes:
Our judges are drawn from our sponsors, who also give presentations about their work. Regardless of whether you intend to stay in academia, knowledge of industry will be valuable. This may be a good chance to get some ideas about what is available, as well as interact directly with industry representatives.
