Tzu-Chi Response to COVID-19
Taming Minds with Love 平和心念安社會
People’s minds have become unsettled by the COVID-19 pandemic. on top of that, a police killing has occurred in the U.S. people took to the streets and protests have been spreading continuously ever since. The situation is truly dangerous. The Buddha said that life is impermanent and the land is fragile. The imbalance in people’s minds can trigger disasters easily. Indeed, the police killing was triggered by the imbalance in people’s minds. There is little we can do and the killing didn’t have to happen. It’s not clear why exactly some rioters are so impulsive. The reason they are acting so impulsively is very hard to understand. Many people dared not or could not go out due to the pandemic. Now, even more people have been alarmed by the protests and dare not go out. The protests have caused a disturbing atmosphere and have indeed brought suffering to many people. The world is full of suffering. There is suffering caused by poverty, aging, or illness. There are also people who suffer in heart as they are worried about their family. Now, the protests have brought about even more suffering. What exactly is the cause of the protests? People would’ve lived in peace and harmony.
Even if there is suffering caused by poverty or illness, when society is peaceful and harmonious, there will always be people who give with love to help the needy. With their aid, the poor can live in long-term stability. So, even if there are poor people, the society will remain stable. Now, given the protests, even the rich can hardly feel at ease, and the poor are even more anxious and afraid. All this is due to the imbalance in people’s minds. At a time like this, we must all the more learn lessons from the protests. It takes the power of love to heal the trauma caused by the incident. I often share how our Tzu Chi members care for the needy. They bring care to the needy, comforting and soothing them through hugs and pats. When they learn of the poor or the needy, they always find a way to reach them and bring them aid more than willingly. Although those they help are not related to them, for there being peace and safety in the world, they give with love and bring aid to the needy. They care for those unrelated to them with love and form good affinities with them as well. Seeing those who are poor, ill, or in suffering, they also feel their pain as their very own. When people are in hardship, they are deeply grieved, and when people suffer from physical pain, they feel their pain as their very own. This is the Bodhisattva heart. This is how they give selflessly with love. So, although there are people who suffer from poverty or illness, there are also people who give with love and bring warmth and aid to them. Inspired, those aid recipients with realize that they can also help others in need and turn their lives around. We can see such an example every day. As our volunteers in the U.S. work with local food banks, the needy can pick food and groceries they need and take them home for free. This is how our Tzu Chi Mobile Food Pantry works in the U.S. People there provide foods to help the needy. I think this is truly a god thing. In that society, people are happy to give and the poor can sustain their lives as a result. The poor can receive aid from those who give. While keeping their self-esteem they can receive supplies provided by those who give with love and can thereby sustain their lives. When I learned about it, I said in admiration: “This relief approach is truly great.” Yet, we also see the protests in the U.S. there is nothing we can do but to pray with sincere piety/ I hope that we will all pray with sincere piety for the public rage in the U.S. to subside. Otherwise, the protests will become even more horrible than the COVID-19 pandemic.
I hope that people around the world will all pray with sincere piety for the protests in the U.S. to end quickly. Otherwise, more protests may occur in European or other countries. Protests in the U.K. and Germany have been reported. More people, as their minds have become unsettled, may take on the streets. I hope that people can calm and settle their minds quickly. Only then will there be safety and peace in the world. Apart from taming our minds, we also need to give our best wishes to people in the U.S. I hope everyone will regain peace e of mind. Consequences caused by imbalance in people’s minds are even more horrible than the pandemic. We shouldn’t let protests continue to spread. Everyone has been alarmed by the coronavirus pandemic, and the turmoil in the U.S., which has been caused by imbalance in people’s mind, is just like another pandemic. I hope that the world will be safe and peaceful without any disasters. For that, we must all pray with sincere piety.
