I think you might be using the wrong TWRP build for your device. TWRP can fail on certain ROM revisions and usually if you are absolutely fucking certain your rom supports your specific device and variation it will usually link the TWRP you need. You need to boot into bootloader, not recovery, typically that's what you get into by holding power + vol up when the phone starts up. From there you can run fastboot boot [twrp filename].img in adb

I'm trying to install TWRP ("openrecovery-twrp-2.8.1.1-trltetmo.img.tar") on Samsung Galaxy Note 4 SM-N910F with Android 5.1.1 . I tried to do it with Odin versions v3.09 and v3.10.7 using different USB cables and ports. The process always seems correct: it shows 'ID:COM' and finishes without errors, showing green and ends up resetting the device, but after that I try to boot into 'Download mode' and after pressing "volume down" + Home + Power it keeps showing the default recovery, it doesn't boot on TWRP.

You should also rename the zip file above to something simple such as "twrp-installer" to keep things clean. You'll want to transfer this zip file to your phone's internal storage to an easy to find location, such as the "Download" folder.

Finally, it's time to take that TWRP image file (twrp.img) you downloaded earlier and transfer it over to the platform-tools folder on your computer. Once the file is in the correct location, you'll then get to execute a quick Fastboot command that allows you to temporarily boot into TWRP.

Since you're temporarily booting TWRP at this time from the image file itself, you'll need to flash the permanent version for it to stick to your system partition. From the TWRP main menu, tap "Install" then locate the TWRP Installer file (twrp-installer.zip) you downloaded from Step 2. ff782bc1db
