Twitch Floating Chat Overlay ("we", "our", or "the extension") is a lightweight browser extension designed to enhance the Twitch viewing experience by turning Twitch's native chat into a floating, transparent, and resizable overlay over the stream.
We believe that user privacy, data minimization, and total transparency are fundamental. We do not track you, we do not collect personal information, and we do not operate remote servers to harvest browsing habits.
This Privacy Policy explains in clear, plain English what permissions the extension requests, why each permission is indispensable, how your settings are handled, and why our architecture guarantees that your private data never leaves your computer.
2. ARE ALL REQUESTED PERMISSIONS TRULY NECESSARY?
Yes, absolutely. Every permission requested by Twitch Floating Chat Overlay has been audited under the Google Chrome Web Store Single Purpose Policy and the strict Principle of Least Privilege. We deliberately eliminated all unnecessary permissions (such as "activeTab", "webRequest", "declarativeNetRequest", "cookies", or broad "<all_urls>" host access).
Here is a straightforward explanation of each permission requested in manifest.json:
a) "storage" Permission:
• Why it is needed:
The extension provides rich user customizations—including your custom chat opacity, message font size, auto-theatre toggle, idle dimming timers, edge-snap thresholds, and individual per-streamer layout positions. The "storage" permission allows the extension to remember these preferences locally on your computer across browser restarts and tab navigations.
• Is it strictly necessary?
Yes. Without the "storage" permission, every time you refresh a stream, switch channels, or restart Chrome, your carefully chosen overlay coordinates, window dimensions, and transparency levels would be erased back to default.
• Where the data lives:
All preferences are saved exclusively inside your browser's private `chrome.storage.local` sandbox. This data remains 100% on your device and is never synchronized to external databases or third-party servers.
b) "host_permissions" (https://*.twitch.tv/*):
• Why it is needed:
The extension needs to interact directly with Twitch's web page elements (`.channel-root__right-column`, `.persistent-player`, etc.) to detach the chat column from the right margin, float it on top of the video player, and instruct the video player to expand across the full width of the browser window.
• Is it strictly necessary?
Yes. The extension cannot perform DOM adjustments or apply CSS overlays on Twitch without host access to Twitch domains (`https://*.twitch.tv/*`).
• Strict Domain Boundary:
The extension only runs on Twitch. It has zero access to your other tabs, browsing history, search engines, social media accounts, or any other web domains.
3. WHAT DATA DO WE COLLECT?
None. We do not collect, transmit, monetize, or log any personal data:
• No Personally Identifiable Information (PII): We do not collect names, email addresses, Twitch usernames, passwords, IP addresses, or payment information.
• No Browsing History: We do not log which channels you watch, what games you browse, or how long you stay on any stream.
• No Chat Message Monitoring: The extension does not read, intercept, or log what you or other viewers type into Twitch chat. It only styles the existing DOM containers visually.
• No Third-Party Analytics: There are no Google Analytics, trackers, telemetry beacons, tracking pixels, or advertising SDKs bundled into this extension.
4. COMPATIBILITY WITH 7TV, BTTV & FFZ
Twitch Floating Chat Overlay functions by styling and transforming Twitch's authentic chat interface rather than replacing it with an external client. Because of this native architecture:
• Third-party emote extensions (7TV, BetterTTV, FrankerFaceZ) continue to communicate directly with their own respective servers as configured by the user.
• Our extension does not alter, intercept, or tamper with communications between those extensions and their servers.
5. DATA RETENTION AND DELETION
All configuration settings are stored locally within your Chrome browser profile. You have complete control over this data at all times:
• You can reset all settings to defaults at any time using the "Restore Default" button in the extension popup.
• You can completely erase all data stored by this extension by simply uninstalling the extension from `chrome://extensions/` or clearing your browser's extension storage.
6. CHILDREN'S PRIVACY
Because our extension does not collect, transmit, or store any personal information, it complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
7. CHANGES TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY
