If you want a discreet, high-capacity transmitter to wirelessly connect your existing wireless earbuds to in-flight entertainment or gym machines, choose Twelve South AirFly SE; if you need dedicated, over-ear headphones with active noise cancellation and 60 hours of play time for a child, choose iClever BTH20. These two devices serve fundamentally different purposes, and comparing them is like comparing a key to a car versus the car itself. One is an adapter designed to unlock audio on older equipment, while the other is a complete listening solution built specifically for younger ears.
• Twelve South AirFly SE: The biggest strength is its ability to bridge the gap between wired audio sources and modern Bluetooth headphones with over 20 hours of battery life; its trade-off is that it is not a headphone but merely a transmitter that requires you to already own compatible earbuds.
• iClever BTH20: The biggest strength is the combination of SafeSound Tech3.1 volume limiting, Active Noise Cancellation, and a massive 47.5-hour average battery life in a durable over-ear design; its trade-off is its bulk and weight compared to tiny earbuds.
• Best For: The AirFly SE is for travelers and professionals who need to listen to airplane TVs or treadmill screens without wires, while the BTH20 is for parents looking for safe, long-lasting headphones for kids.
The Twelve South AirFly SE exists to solve a very specific problem that frustrates many travelers and fitness enthusiasts: the disappearance of the 3.5mm headphone jack. You have a pair of great wireless earbuds, perhaps AirPods or Galaxy Buds, but you are sitting in an airplane seat, stepping onto a hotel room treadmill, or plugging into an older car stereo that only offers a physical audio output. This small, white plastic device plugs directly into that jack and transforms the wired signal into a Bluetooth stream. It does not produce sound itself; instead, it acts as a bridge, allowing your existing wireless headphones to connect to almost any legacy audio source.

For nurses who work long shifts and often rely on personal music or podcasts to stay focused, this device is a game-changer. Imagine needing to listen to a podcast while wearing sports earbuds for nurses during a break, but the hospital TV or a shared media station only has a corded output. Plugging in the AirFly SE allows you to use your favorite wireless buds instantly. It supports Bluetooth 5.2 and aptX, ensuring a stable connection with minimal latency. The controls are intuitive, letting you adjust volume directly on the small unit, which is crucial when you need quick adjustments without fumbling with a phone.
However, this product is not for everyone. If you do not already own Bluetooth headphones, this device is useless to you. It cannot function as a standalone speaker or a primary listening device. It is purely an accessory. Furthermore, while it claims compatibility with hearing aids, it will not work with models that rely on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or require a proprietary app to pair. If you need a simple plug-and-play solution for a standard pair of wireless earbuds, this is excellent, but it adds a layer of complexity for those who just want to buy one thing that does everything.
The iClever BTH20 is a complete package designed from the ground up for children, though it serves adults who prefer a secure, over-ear fit just as well. Unlike the AirFly SE, which is a tiny dongle, this is a full set of headphones featuring large 40-millimeter dynamic drivers and a robust build made from ABS plastic and soft leather-like materials. Its standout feature is the "SafeSound Tech3.1," which actively limits volume to protect young ears from damage, a critical consideration for anyone buying audio gear for toddlers or school-age children.
This device is ideal for families who spend a lot of time traveling. With an average battery life of 47.5 hours, you can go weeks without charging it, even with daily use. The Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) feature is another major draw, helping to block out the chaotic sounds of airplanes, busy trains, or loud households. This makes it a perfect choice for bluetooth true wireless earbuds for nurses' children who might be tired after a long day at school, or for autistic children who benefit from the sensory isolation that ANC provides. The headphones connect via Bluetooth 5.4, offering a strong range of up to 10 meters, and they include a detachable 3.5mm cable for wired use when the battery runs low.
The trade-off here is size and weight. At 220 grams, these are significantly heavier than the AirFly SE or typical in-ear monitors. They are over-ear headphones, meaning they cover the entire ear rather than sitting inside it. While this provides better comfort for long sessions and better noise isolation, it also means they are less portable. You cannot tuck them into a pocket like the AirFly SE. They come with a protective case, but they still occupy more space in a bag. If you are looking for something to wear while running or working out where sweat resistance and compactness are paramount, these bulky earmuffs might not be the right fit.
• Best for travel adapters → Twelve South AirFly SE: It turns any 3.5mm jack into a Bluetooth source, essential for planes and gyms.
• Best for active noise cancellation → iClever BTH20: Features dedicated ANC to silence the world around you, which the AirFly SE lacks entirely.
• Best for battery longevity → iClever BTH20: Delivers nearly double the playback time of the AirFly SE, lasting up to 47.5 hours on a single charge.
• Best for portability → Twelve South AirFly SE: Weighs only 13.61 grams and fits easily in a coin pocket, whereas the headphones are much larger.
• Best for children and safety → iClever BTH20: Includes SafeSound Tech3.1 volume limiting to protect hearing, a feature absent in the transmitter.
• Best for existing wireless users → Twelve South AirFly SE: Allows you to keep using your current premium earbuds with older equipment.
• Best for all-in-one solution → iClever BTH20: Comes with the drivers, battery, and controls in one unit, requiring no additional purchases.
• Best for connectivity versatility → Twelve South AirFly SE: Works with any Bluetooth headphone, giving you flexibility to switch devices.
In my opinion, I would choose the iClever BTH20 if I were buying for a family member or a child, because it is a complete, safe, and powerful listening experience that doesn't rely on owning a separate pair of earbuds first. However, if I am writing this for a nurse who needs to listen to in-flight entertainment or gym equipment while wearing their own sports earbuds for nurses, the Twelve South AirFly SE is the only logical choice. It solves the immediate hardware limitation of the environment. For a professional who already owns quality wireless earbuds, the AirFly SE is the indispensable tool that keeps them connected in a wired world. Ultimately, the AirFly SE is the superior tool for the specific use case of converting legacy audio jacks, making it the winner for that specific niche.
It may work with hearing aids that support standard Bluetooth pairing modes, but it will not work with devices that use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or require a companion app to connect. You should check your specific hearing aid model's specifications before purchasing.
Yes, the iClever BTH20 offers an impressive average battery life of 47.5 hours, which is more than enough to cover multiple long-haul flights or days of heavy use without needing to recharge.
They are designed for general use and travel, but extreme moisture exposure should be avoided.
The AirFly SE transmits audio to your own headphones; therefore, the loudness depends entirely on the volume capabilities of the Bluetooth headphones you pair it with, not the adapter itself.
