The Villages Butterfly Garden Club Meetings


The Villages Butterfly Gardens Club usually meets the third Friday of each month at 1:30 pm - 3:20 pm in the Fish Hawk Village Recreation Center. Our members range from master gardeners to picture-book beginners. The club maintains demonstration gardens, shares experiences, gathers wonderful speakers.

Everyone invited. This meeting is at the Fred Funk Butterfly Garden.

A meeting not to miss. Speaker will be Edith Smith from Shady Oaks Butterfly Farm located in Brooker, FL. She is retired from the business. Edith has done extensive research on raising Monarchs. The farm provides butterflies to museums and butterfly exhibits across the country.

Our speaker cancelled! We will have a a panel of seasoned gardeners who will entertain discussion and attempt to provide answers and ideas during a Q&A session about butterfly gardening.

We will hold off on the dedication to the Fred Funk Butterfly Garden as we are waiting for the sign.

We welcome April McClain from Green Isle Gardens. (Address is 11303 FL-33, Groveland, FL ) She is the greenhouse manager there. Her specialty is larval host plants.

Speaker will be Rachel Mallinger, Assistant Professor, University of Florida, Department of Entomology and Nematology.

Title: Supporting native wild bees in your garden

Description: Bees are a diverse and fascinating group of insects, with approximately 20,000 species worldwide and 4,000 species in North America. They are very important pollinators for both crop and wild plants. In this program, Dr. Rachel Mallinger will describe the importance, diversity, and biology of native wild bees in Florida, threats to their populations, and ways that we can work together to conserve them. You will learn practical ways to support bees in your garden.
