The traditional windowing system works well as long as you only have a handful of small windows, but issues emerge as soon the number and size of the windows grows. As new windows are opened, existing ones are obscured, sometimes completely hiding them from view. Or, when you open a maximized window, suddenly every other window is hidden.

Traditional tiling window managers solve the hidden window problem by preventing windows from overlapping. While this works well in some cases, it falls short as a general replacement for stacked, floating windows. The first reason for this is that tiling window managers size windows according to the amount of available screen space, yet most apps are designed to be used at a certain size and aspect ratio. For example, chat apps are inherently narrow and end up having large amounts of empty space at large sizes. Similarly, reading a PDF in a tiny window is not fun.

Another issue with tiling window manager is that they place new windows in seemingly arbitrary positions. This is a consequence of them not having knowledge about the content of a window or the context in which it is being used, and leads to having to manually move or resize windows after the fact, which is exactly the kind of fiddling we want to avoid in the first place.

As mentioned above, to avoid the pitfalls of traditional tiling window managers we need more information from windows about their content. Windows can already set a fixed size and they have an implicit minimum size, but to build a great tiling experience we need more.

Another thing is that in my workflow there are windows I like to have maximized and in the same workspace (think of IDE and web browser or DEVhelp) and be able to switch between the two fast and one-handedly, and ideally see their content in overview.

Interesting proposal. Now let me tell you what I think would be really helpful: I almost have no usecase where I need to see more than one window at once. Seeing multiple windows at once confuses and distracts me. I never understood the idea of having multiple windows stacked one over the other, which is the default when you have multiple windows on one workspace or in any other DE. Its even visually difficult to distinct one window from the other. While I think it might make sense to have multiple windows on one workspace when they belong to a single task or project, it still confuses to see them stacked one over the other. Lets say I am working on a shell script and have a terminal open, a text editor and a web browser for researching commands. Its nice to have all these windows on a single workspace since they belong to one task/project I am working on, it still makes no sense for me to have lets say the web browser with all its bling bling and blinking adds or even any other windows in the background of the terminal I am working on. Its just pure distraction. If I switch to a window by alt-tab ov via the overview, I almost always want to see this window only, and nothing else in the background. So to achieve this and to stay focused, I have to press super+d first to hide all windows, then switch to the desired window via overview or alt-tab.

I wish there was a default setting that when you chose a window by alt-tab or via the overview, only this chosen window gets displayed, while all others hide.

Maybe does someone know of an extension that does exactly this?

One of the reasons it is hard for me to use workspaces is lack of application support in context to workspaces.

In tabbed applications (like browsers and text editor) opening files or links externally will trigger xdg-open which will usually open the file/link in the last opened/active window, and that quite often is on entirely different workspace than you are currently on. When trying to group workspaces by the work I am doing it is very inconvenient to constantly manually move tabs between different browser windows.

In practice this means tiling the lower display as if it were 2-4 workspaces side-by-side (though in fact they are just many tiled windows), with the user moving them to the workspace on the upper display for detail work. This can be very productive when workflow involves a large number of applications on the relatively small screen space of a laptop. The downside is how many application windows freak out, when presented with a very wide, physically small and vertically arranged second display, or being moved to a completely different physical display.

On the one hand, I like the idea of integrating the concept of workspaces here, but on the other hand, I think working with workspaces is currently much harder and more time-consuming than working with windows.

A defect is logged to update our documentation to explain this limitation: BUG-000109547: Update existing documentation to inform Users that publishing an Image Service from a mosaic dataset created with ArcMap/ArcCatalog 10.5+ to ArcGIS Server 10.3.1 is not technically possible

I want to attempt to stitch a mosaic image using a number of smaller images, likely in a 2x2 or perhaps 3x3 grid. Assuming this is possible in Affinity Photo, does anyone have a recommendation for a general flow to maximize quality and minimize issues?

Any small scale mosaic tile you find will do and there are so many available to choose from. This project can be done without the use of a tile cutting saw if you stick to the mesh grid square mosaics like the one seen above instead of an offset or brick pattern tile. I chose white because the planter was destined to be part of a raffle at the Home Depot presentation and because basic white would be at home in any backyard.

Anam Cara Artists use broken pieces of colorful stained glass on old windows with wooden frames to create a unique design. All windows vary in size and theme so placing a specific order and communicating with Director of Anam Cara Creations, Jill Morrow, is necessary. Window prices depend on size and time put in to each piece. Some window themes include but are not limited to: Family Tree, Tree of Love, Spring: Cherry Blossom Tree, Summer: Green Tree, Autumn: Tree with Warm Leaves, Winter: Evergreen, Lone Pine, Tree of the Sea (made with shells). Sea of Life windows designs are Octopus, Fish.

One thought is that it might have something to do with me launching 2 instances of touch designer per node ( 1 for each GPU ). Maybe if the second instance came online after the one that displays its output on the same window as the task bar. Maybe windows would pop an alert into the task bar to show that a new process is open? Is there a way to turn this off?

How to have a flat (and not 3D) mosaic / grid of all open windows?without having to do something like ALT+TAB and then hold ALT? In a similar way than Mac four fingers swipe "Mission Control":

Mosaic stained glass windows are fun to create and make beautiful decorations. Cut out pieces of coloured glass with a glass cutter and stick them to a pane of glass with clear glue. Then, press grout into the cracks between the mosaic glass pieces to make them stand out and seal everything when you're done. Display your finished mosaic stained glass window in your home or gift it to a loved one.

Most images will be painted from the inside and should be completed with tempera paint, window markers, and/or Line Flow ink. Please note that due to access issues, some windows will be painted on the exterior, in which case acrylic paint is recommended. We cannot guarantee or promise whether an artist will be selected to paint on the interior or exterior.

Sharra (share-ah) Frank is an established mosaic artist inMinneapolis, Minnesota. Her mosaic obsession began in 2000, while stillan art student at the University of Minnesota. She worked from herkitchen table, creating small pieces to sell in local flower shops. Witheach small success her artistic vision grew and so did the scale andintricacy of her work. After making the leap to a private studio shecontinued creating the intricate, whimsical and inspiring mosaic mirrorsand window hangings that are her signature. At the same time, she madethe transition to full-time artist and never looked back. Sharra hasseveral large-scale installations and murals throughout the Twin Citiesarea, has worked with high-end designers and clientele everywhere fromFlorida to California and has exhibited with the Mosaic ArtsInternational and SOFA NY. She teaches beginning and advanced mosaicclasses from her Minneapolis studio, online and around the US withmosaic educational organizations such theSociety of American Mosaic Artists, the Institute of Mosaic Art.

This class is more than just an introduction to mosaics. Theinformation provided in this class can be applied to endless mosaicprojects, not just windows and mirrors. This class gives you a strongfoundation of skills and resources that will ensure success in futureprojects, and save you time and money.

I built my career as a mosaic artist by spending several years andthousands of hours creating original mosaic pieces, teaching mosaics, taking private commissions, leading collaborative mosaicart installations and showing my work through juried exhibitions andopen studio events. In the introductory video I show you how I wasintroduced to the world of mosaics and how my work evolved over timefrom simple glass-on-glass mosaic windows to mixed media, largerpieces and the incorporation of new and more advanced mosaic techniques.

Mosaic is one of video editing means that can hide inappropriate or personal information by circling a range and then overlapping the images with totally different pixels in the range. More often than not, we also can use Mosaic to add artistic sense to the video. The following steps may help you to eliminate your concerns when using Windows Movie Maker to easily apply mosaics to video.

I teach art full time and try to create art during nights, weekends and school vacations. These stained glass mosaics are very time consuming and involve many stages from cutting the glass, to gluing, to grouting, to clean up. For windows, I need to find a vintage window that is close to the size you want first. These windows are expensive as they take me over 40 hours to create in most cases. Below are some windows I have done.
