The life cycle of sea turtles begins with their hatchlings breaking through their shells and crawling towards the ocean. After baby turtles hatch, they follow the moonlight towards the shore. When the turtles are in the water, they grow, reproduce, and start another life cycle.

As residential areas grew in the Atlantic and Gulf Coast, the sea turtles began to suffer. Baby turtles would follow the light from local residences instead of the moonlight. Unfortunately, if baby turtles don't reach their natural habitat they die within a few days.

If you live on an oceanfront property a very dark tint usually referred to as Turtle Glass or Dark Gray Glass must be used on openings facing the water due to local ordinances and Florida Building Codes. This tint has the lowest visible transmission rating and is used to prevent confusing the turtle hatchlings in which direction to go when attempting to return to the ocean. Their natural instinct is to go towards the reflection of the moonlight off of the ocean. If there is another light source, they become confused and go in the wrong direction.

Turtle glass is tinted glass that only allows 45% of artificial light from the inside of your home to pass through. According to the Florida Building Code all windows and glass doors that emit artificial light that is visible from sea turtle nesting areas on the beach must be tinted to a transmittance value (light transmission from inside to outside) of 45% or less.

Artificial lighting can also impact sea turtle hatchlings. Once they emerge from their nests, baby turtles instinctively move away from dark and towards the moonlight. For millions of years, dunes and vegetation near land created dark shadows while the moon and stars reflected off the ocean surface which created a bright light. Today, artificial light from businesses and homes are confused with the moonlight, sending the baby turtles in the opposite direction of the ocean.

Turtle glass is a special kind of glass that has been tinted to project little to no light, along with visible light transmittance of less than 45%. This limits the amount of light that escapes from windows, which allows the baby sea turtles to return back to sea using the strong light from the moon.

We consider ourselves lucky to live along some of the most beautiful beaches in the world here on the Gulf Coast. To help protect the wildlife that lives on our shores, consider installing turtle glass windows and doors in your beach-front home.

Our beaches are also home to many species of spectacular wildlife. In particular, sea turtles are drawn to our beaches to find their ancestral nesting sites. They travel the ocean currents for most of their lives, but eventually return to nest along the same stretch of sand from which they themselves were hatched.

When sea turtle eggs hatch in the warm summer months, the baby turtles dig their way out of the sand and head for the ocean. Normally, they are guided by the light of the moon to crawl to the ocean waves where they will hopefully grow to reproductive age and begin the cycle again. However, with the large number of homes and businesses that are now found along the beach, the turtles can become confused by the multiple sources of light.

When owners of ocean-front homes have lights on at night, standard windows and doors allow the light to shine through to the beach. Standard glass can also reflect light from any nearby fixtures or the light of the moon. Rather than using their limited energy to get to the water, the newly hatched turtles can exhaust themselves crawling towards these bright sources of light on the land. This leaves them drained and exposed to predators, and reduces the numbers of hatchlings that survive.

To prevent this tragedy, many Florida counties have adopted regulations to limit the amount of light that falls on known and potential sea turtle nesting sites. Known as the Sea Turtle Protection Code, these regulations include a provision regarding the glass on beach-facing windows and doors.

Turtle graphics were based on turtle robots, which were used in programming. In 1948, Grey Walter created his first robots, named Elmer and Elsie. People often thought his robots looked and moved like tortoises.

Today it was donuts. Microsoft thought I needed to spend all day staring at donuts. And it is not in windows 11, just loser Windows 10. Today lots of sites including Glizmodo had how to remove it. Just like the thurott forum member posted last week.

PythonTurtle strives to provide the lowest-threshold way to learn (or teach) software development in the Python programming language. Students command an interactive Python shell (similar to the IDLE development environment) and use Python functions to move a turtle displayed on the screen. An illustrated help screen introduces the student to the basics of Python programming while demonstrating how to move the turtle.

Living on or near the coastline comes with many perks, but as most homeowners [situated near the coast] know it also comes with additional responsibilities/requirements. Besides needing extra protection when bearing the brunt of severe weather storms, many homeowners are also required to comply with sea turtle protection ordinances. Upon hatching, baby sea turtles instinctively move toward the moonlight and into the ocean. However, over the years as artificial lights became more common along the coastline, the sea turtle hatchlings, confused by the light, would make their way inland where they would die of dehydration or consumed by predators.

The state of Florida implemented Section 161.163, Florida Statutes, which requires the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to designate coastal areas utilized, or likely to be utilized, by sea turtles for nesting, and to establish guidelines for local government regulations that control beachfront lighting to protect hatching sea turtles. Read the model lighting ordinance in Chapter 62B-55 to learn more.

How do I know if the fixture is and bulb is turtle friendly? FWC provides a Wildlife Lighting Certification to make it easy to determine. Look for the FWC Certification on the packaging. More information can be found on the FWC website:

Do I need curtains if I already have tinted turtle glass? Yes, 45 percent transmittance does not mitigate light pollution from interior lights enough to prevent disorientations of sea turtles. Therefore the Sea Turtle Ordinance requires window covers to be installed. Window coverings with low light transmittance such as black out curtains are recommended to shield interior lights from the beach.

The turtle module provides turtle graphics primitives, in both object-oriented and procedure-oriented ways. Because it uses tkinter for the underlying graphics, it needs a version of Python installed with Tk support.

On Windows, when run in IDLE with 3.12, I get a large window (1000x1000?) with, as expected, a short line pointing right. I have no idea why you do not. Try running that code in a file directly with python in a command-line terminal. Also run the turtle demo with python -m turtle.

With your having reported that tkinter works on your system, we create a tkinter.Tk() window. Then we associate a turtle.RawTurtle with a tkinter.Canvas on that window in hopes that it will circumvent the problem on your system with performing turtle graphics.

Many thanks for the reply, and I am happy to write that the program works in my Linux Fedora. I can run it either from IDLE or from the terminal.

The window is made with tkinter, the drawing is made with turtle in that window.

From now I can use this for more exercises.

Many thanks to all for the good communication.

In recent years, sea turtle biologists, nest surveyors, code enforcement personnel and conservation organizations have reported an increase in temporary lighting use from the public such as white flashlights and cell phone use on the beach for nighttime recreational activities. This emerging trend poses a threat to nesting beaches, even in areas that have undergone a lighting retrofit and are considered sea turtle friendly. White flashlights are full spectrum, which means they contain both short and long wavelengths; short wavelength light disorients sea turtles.

One way that people have tried to mitigate this problem is by distributing these popular flashlight stickers. When a person attaches it to the lens on their flashlight or cell phone light, the light appears red. However, despite the red appearance, filters do not alter the wavelength of light (as confirmed by spectrometer readings) and can still negatively affect sea turtles.

Red LED flashlights and headlamps are also advertised to the public as a turtle friendly alternative. Even though red flashlights or red headlamps can actually be long wavelength, the intensity of a long wavelength flashlight still poses a threat to nesting females and hatchling sea turtles.

For the public (residents and visitors) the only turtle friendly solution is to not use any lights on the beach. The public can participate in alternative activities that do not come at the expense of wildlife. These include; stargazing, enjoying the beach at night without flashlights, fishing from sea turtle friendly piers and looking for bioluminescence.
