Just got a new SE, so now I have this 1st gen SE without a sim card or carrier. From searching I got the impression that I should be able to use the old phone to make wifi calls over my home network ("it's easy!"). I assumed that once on the network I just tap in the phone number/text address and voila! Wrong assumption.

I've jumped thru all the hoops I know of (unlocking it, turning on "make wifi calls on other devices" on my new phone, etc etc), and I can access the network/Internet on my old phone, I can send emails (but not receive them on the phone, just on the computer), but it won't make calls or texts. I think the problem is that when I go to click on "Phone" in Settings, it's inactive, so I can't set it up for wifi calling (yet it also says "Network unavailable" but it IS available. I also can't sign into Messages. Yet sites like "5 Ways to Make Phone Call Without Sim Card or Service Provider" swear I should be able to do this. Two hours later...nada. Supposedly I could do it with Facetime but only to other Facetime users.

Never mind! I dl Google Voice, only to find that after I set up a Google account and chose a phone number, I had to enter my real phone number because all calls to my Voice number would be routed to my real number. With ads! And god knows whatever personal information they can get. No thanks - that's like the opposite of what I want in wifi calling. I thought it might be cool to have an old phone I can use as needed, but not in this typical Google predatory way. Delete app! Sorry to waste everybody's time - but then I wasted like 4 hours or more trying to figure this stuff out. Tech strikes again!

I am not certain this would help, but I have an iPad that did not purchase with cell phone capability. Just wifi. I can make/receive calls on there if I am logged on with my appleID. I first had to enable/let that device (wifi iPad) share my service through iCloud, I think. I might have gone to iCloud and authorized that device. Been a while...but when I get a FaceTime call to my iPhone phone number, it also rings on my wifi only iPad. I am pretty sure I also can receive calls from anyone...and for this I enabled the allow wifi calls. HTH

I gave the IMEI number to my carrier, which (since I had no contract and had paid in full for the phone) sent it to Apple to unlock the phone (I didn't know this was how unlocking worked). On my phone where it formerly showed it was "carrier locked" it now shows "No sim restrictions" - I don't even have a sim in it. But I can still access the internet on my home network (the point being to be able to make a call if my new phone is missing or dead for some reason). I don't really know how any of this works, but at the moment I'm in the App Store reading about Google Voice (and typically for online reviews of whatever, reviews are all over the map). But I can't go into Phone in Settings and turn on wifi calling because Phone is the only Settings function that's inactivated.

"My US primary SIM provider allow Wifi-Calling even when overseas as if it was a domestic calls but if when roaming, if I turn my phone off Airplane mode, I get immediatly charged a $10/day fee as soon as my phone connect to a roaming network even if not receiving or calling outside of Wifi-Calling.

In the past I was simply keeping my US phone on Airplane mode with just Wifi when overseas. I have a second phone with my European SIM that I turn on and was providing me calls, data and was making Wifi hot spot for the US phone.

Yes, this is possible. While the iPhone doesn't allow airplane mode on only 1 of the 2 lines (it's both or neither), there is another way to accomplish this. Calls/texts from one line (A) over Cellular Data is only enabled if you are currently on a call with the other line (B), or the line (A) has no service. You may be able to manually select an incompatible network for the line (A) to connect to, which will result in no service and enable calls/texts over Cellular Data. Another way to accomplish this, is to log into your AT&T account and remove both "day pass" and "pay per use" features from your line (A). This will result in no roaming/no signal to your line and enable calls/texts over the Cellular Data from your line (A).

Below is a screenshot in use. Airplane mode is off. eSIM AT&T line (A) has both "day pass" and "pay per use" removed, thus no service, and enabling calls/texts over Cellular Data from data only line (B). Enjoy!

Is there a setting/ability that I'm not seeing that essentially allows me to put my primary (USA) number in wifi only mode (like a phone in airplane with wifi turned on), thus preserving it for FaceTime and iMessage, and have my "travel" number take care of everything else?

I hope there is a setting that I'm not seeing, but right now my only option seems to be turning off the cellular completely, which automatically makes the other number the one for FaceTime and iMessage.

When I turned the phone line back on, LTE was enabled so I quickly toggled it off, but I don't think that will help me to limit voice/data to just wifi. Also, under Network Selection there isn't "wifi" to choose. It just allows me to choose automatically or pick a specific carrier.

Thanks, Alex. Turning it completely off was what I was trying to avoid. I'd been doing that, but it switched Facetime/imessage to my UK number which prevented me from getting any of my messages on my US number while I'm in the UK. That seems strange that those type of controls would be carrier dependent. I would think that turning off data and not turning off wifi is something basic enough that apple would put in that capability for any user. I can't be the only one who is trying to avoid horrible international rates through a US provider--especially AT&T which has to be one of the biggest. Sigh. Maybe that will be in a iOS future update.

But I've been able to do this for years. See my original post where I had two phones--my US phone that was in airplane mode with wifi turned on (what i'm trying to do on the dual sim phone) that I was able to continue to receive my iMessage and FaceTime messages on my US number, and my UK phone, which was separate. I'm trying to recreate that experience with the dual sim iPhone.

I think I'm making what I want to do sound more complicated than it is. All I want to do is be able to turn off "cellular" on a sim and still be able to receive iMessages/Facetime on that number on the dual sim phone. Right now as soon as cellular is turned off for one number the other number is *automatically* enabled for iMessage and FaceTime--this is an apple functionally not an AT&T functionality. I don't mind having my AT&T phone completely "off," but I still want that number to work with wifi for imessage/facetime. What I'm trying to do is no more nefarious than turning wifi on when a phone is in airplane mode or checking iMessage/facetime on a computer.

That's precisely what I am saying - when you turn cellular off for the number, carriers may not allow it to then still work over Wi-Fi unless you have Wi-Fi calling enabled. That could be Apple, or it could be AT&T.

It has been allowed for years with every iPhone I've had back until at least the 4 or 5. If your phone is in airplane mode (i.e. everything cellular/data is "off") you can still enable wifi and receive imessages and FaceTime on that phone. If you have an iPhone you can try it with your phone right now to see what I'm talking about by putting it in airplane mode and turning wifi on.

It's the same thing as receiving iMessages or FaceTime over a computer or wifi only iPad (i.e. anything without data) with that same AT&T phone number. AT&T is completely out of the equation on those devices.

Basically all I want to do is turn off cellular on one SIM and still enable wifi on that line. I expected to have some kind of toggle option when I turned off cellular, i.e. "Would you like to enable wifi on this line to use for iMessage and Factime" or something like that. I'd hoped it was something I'd missed, but it sounds like the functionality to do that is not there.

I have two iPhone 7 Plus phones. Both are connected to the same wifi as well as every device in my house. But my iPhone appears to choose the cellular connection for data. If I tell the app to only use wifi, or turn off cellular data, it works fine on wifi. But then its not usable when I leave my home. Simply opening up safari to google, it will say no internet on my phone but my wife goes right to it (cell connection is only 1 bar in my home). My instagram is crazy slow or won't connect, youtube videos will not play.

Yes I agree it should be off. I do know some things use only cellular. I am talking about safari, Facebook and Instagram all loading slow or not at all on full WiFi but poor cellular. If I turn off the cellular they load fine.

I am implementing a method in iOS app that allow user to download content over WiFi only or use both WiFi and 3G network to download content from web server, my question is how to make switch that can be turn on and off for downloading WiFi or 3G only option? just like apple use it for iTunes Store content on iOS, so if user turn wifi only option on than content will only be downloaded using wifi network.

I have discovered that MMS messages (photo messages) cannot be sent or received while on WiFi. It appears that cellular data must be turned on to use MMS messages when using an iPhone. Android users, however, can use MMS messages with cellular data turned off.

I have also discoverd that there is a workaround for iPhone users: if you turn on "WiFi Calling", then you may be able to use MMS messages with ceullar data turned off. There is one caveat: after turning on WiFi Calling, you must then put your phone into airplane mode. With WiFi calling turned on and the iPhone in airplane mode, MMS messages work with only a WiFi connection. This workaround is inconvenient because airplane mode means that I cannot make or receive phone calls while away from a WiFi network. ff782bc1db
