Mary Queen of Scots
Mary Queen of Scots was born in Scotland in 1542. Her grandmother was the sister of King Henry VIII and so she belonged to the Tudor family. Her father was James V, King of Scotland and her mother was Mary of Guise of France. Unfortunately, her father died when she was only six days old and she became Queen of Scotland as a baby.
When Mary was five, her mother sent her to France. The French King, Henry II, loved her very much because she was clever and beautiful. She had lovely red hair. In 1558 she married the French prince Francis. Soon Francis became King of France and at the age of 17 Mary was already queen of two countries: Scotland and France.
Unfortunately, King Francis died very young and Mary decided to go back to Scotland. She married Lord Darnley and they had a son, James. One day, Darnley was found dead and the nobles blamed Mary for his death. Mary escaped to England, hoping that her cousin Elizabeth, the Queen of England, would help her. Instead of helping Mary, Elizabeth put her in prison. She was in prison for the next 19 years, until her death. On 8 February 1587, Mary was beheaded. Mary's life was tragic. But sixteen years later, when Elizabeth I of England died, Mary's son, James, became King of England.
