Tung-Sung Tseng

Dr. Tseng is an Associate Professor with tenure and the Charles L. Brown, MD, Endowed Professor of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in Behavioral and Community Health Sciences (BCHS) at the School of Public Health within the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. His research focuses on understanding the disparities and elucidating the determinants of health behaviors to change unhealthy/risky behaviors among ethnic minorities and underserved populations. His expertise includes cancer, tobacco control, obesity, health disparities, genetic and behavioral interactions, community-based participatory research (CBPR), implementation sciences, community/ behavioral intervention, and evaluation methods (social media, big data, GIS, AI and smart devices). In addition, Dr. Tseng serves as a principal investigator or co-Investigator on several university-, state- and NIH-funded grants to integrate research and practice in public health.  As PI or co-Investigator on several university- and NIH-funded grants, he has been developing effective intervention approaches and collaborated with researchers to identify mediation and interaction effect between a genotype and a social or behavioral risk factor. He has more than 90 peer-review publications and 170 professional conference presentations.

Furthermore, Dr. Tseng has substantial experience in teaching/mentoring and professional leadership, and community service activities. He chaired the BCHS & School of Public Health Curriculum Committee to review syllabi and develop the BSPH, MPH, Ph.D. MD/MPH, MD/Ph.D. course curriculum. He has taught both doctoral, master's, and undergraduate level classes and has mentored over 50 master's students, 15 doctoral students, four postdoctoral fellows, and 5 junior faculty members. Dr. Tseng has substantial experience in professional leadership and community service activities. He chaired the SPH Diversity, Equity and Inclusion(DEI) Committee, curriculum committee, the Ethics Committee of the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) and Genomic Forum of the American Public Health Association (APHA), and a co-convener for International Comparisons of Healthy Aging Interest Group, The Gerontological Society of America (GSA).  Besides, he has served as a Lead Evaluator of the On-Site Reaffirmation Committee for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges(SACSCOC), a board member of the NIH Data & Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB), and scientific grant reviewer for National Institutes of Health (NIH), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration(SAMHSA), Louisiana Clinical and Translational Science Center (LA CaTS), and Louisiana Children's Trust Fund (LCTF). Dr. Tseng also serves as editor, associate editor, reviewer, or member of the review board for thirty more professional journals. He has been recognized with several awards and recognitions, including the Scientific Achievement Award from the Louisiana Cancer Research Consortium, the Young Investigator Award from the Asia Pacific Tobacco Control Association, APHA Distinguished Genomic Forum Service Award, Dr. Allen A Copping Award for Excellent in Teaching and Frank Hara Community Service Award from the Asian-Pacific American Society (APAS).
