Our Bols Genever Light Bulb glasses will add a creative spark to your cocktail presentation, making it the ideal vessel for parties or dinners! Our signature Bols Red Light Negroni will look particularly good in these quirky light bulbs, which sit steadily on any surface thanks to their flat base.

Nose: Inviting and warm, with lots of little subtleties, like cinnamon and cardamom, with light touches of aniseed and vanilla. Well balanced.

Taste: Warm baking spices, lots of cinnamon. Fairly sweet also, but with a subtle peppery edge. Again, vanilla from the wood. The balance is here too. Good stuff.

Finish: A little shorter than I hoped for. The oak lingers for a little while.

You might drink gin all the time and consider yourself a well-adjusted, very happy person. Same! But after the third martini, you might start to ask yourself: what even is gin? And why am I ordering so many light-up hula hoops on eBay?

Flavor-wise, it's more citrus forward than London Dry, and you might get a spicier finish from their blend of seven botanicals: juniper, coriander seed (adds acidity), dried sweet orange peels, cardamom, Angelica root, and Orris root. Because of those roots, said our gin guru, "the gin has a bit of an earthier feel, and it's a little bit softer in juniper. It has a nice kind of oily texture, which works fantastic in things like martinis and negronis, anything that has a slightly bitter flavor, Plymouth gin work really, really well."

Traditionally Barley is used to form malt, which is mixed with corn and rye to produce sugar. By adding yeast to the sugar, alcohol is formed. Distilling the alcohol three times formes malt wine (I hope I got this little story right).

Malt wine however is a semi-finished product. Old Jenever is produced by distilling this malt wine with juniper berries, a complex process which is executed differently by various brands. Old Jenever is then aged in wooden barrels (similar to whisky) resulting in a light yellow color and often a soft but rich taste.

A wooden cask is a natural product, so each batch tastes different. The taste profile therefore varies slightly for each new batch, but each one has a clear Islay touch, which makes each batch of Wenneker Genever Islay Cask Finish very special and distinctively unique.

Currently we sell the nineth batch Wenneker Genever Islay Finish. The batch is shown on the label, as well as the month of bottling, the numbers of the used casks and the tasting notes of that batch. Furthermore all bottles are indivudually numbered.

Tasting notes:

Colour: Bright light gold

Nose: Barbecue smoke, light vanilla, and grassy notes

Body: Smokey bacon, liquorice, juniper, lemon pie

Finish: Spicy, lemon peel, and lingering sweetness

Bols Genever (Holland; Lucas Bols, Manhasset, NY); $30, 90 points. Roku Gin (Japan; Beam Suntory, Chicago, IL); $28, 93 points. Subtle, nuanced and light, the first sips open with citrusy yuzu peel and a mild floral note reminiscent of sakura flower, which lingers effortlessly into the finish. Tea botanicals sencha and gyokuro add a grounding, earthy element wrapping up with a flicker of ginger heat. Best Buy. abv: 43%

The Boomsma oude I have; it has no perceptible juniper in it and seems to me like a cross between Irish whiskey and vodka--a light, slightly malty and very clean distillate that has a few interesting cocktail uses. The jonge I have not tried but would right now give my eyeteeth (whatever they are) for a bottle of. I'm assuming it's malty and junipery, as all the other (few) jonge genevers I've had are. If so, pounce!

After distillation, the master distillers create a unique blend. This blend consists of malt wine that has matured for 3 years, juniper berry distillate, water from the soil on site & grain alcohol. Filliers Distillery is also one of the few who still brew their own malt wine, and for that reason may call itself a warm distillery. The result is a light yellow grain genever in which refined flavours develop long & soft.Taste notes: Notes of very soft grain with wood, interspersed with a touch of vanilla and malt wine. The finish is long & soft, with fine spicy notes.

Then the master distillers create a unique blend of the aged malt wine, grain alcohol, water, and the juniper distillate. The traditional production process in copper stills is combined with craftsmanship that intertwines knowledge from generations. This results in genever with a velvety grain flavour and a warm light yellow colour.

It is still also one of the most pleasant recipes. The RODANTE jenever celebrates birth but espacially the period of expecting prior to it. It narrates about the longing and the struggle. The jenever is named after my dear friend RODANTE who is both a philosopher and a midwife. Therefore she was also the perfect woman to help the first Filosoof Jenever to see the light. 17dc91bb1f
