Why should we care about pears and other fruit on Tsushima?
On Tsushima, pears shipped from the interior cost more than $5 each, largely due to the cost of shipping. Also, a small bunch of grapes can range between $7 and $30.
When my family and I first moved to Tsushima, we could only buy one apple a week because of the high cost of fresh fruit, and we had to share that one apple with our family.
I really felt sorry for the elderly people who lived alone and survived only on a small pension.
They would come to the supermarket and lament that they could not eat a single pear because they were too expensive.
In a bad harvest year, like this year, the price of fruit goes up even more. So we wanted to sell the pears at a slightly higher price than last year to help our family's livelihood and to maintain the work of evangelism.
A 90-year-old grandmother we met in the field. She gladly accepted the peaches and the gospel tract.
However, God, who protects the farm and provides all the necessities, had quite the opposite idea. Jesus, who miraculously multiplied two fish and five loaves of bread for 5,000 people, told us to provide for as many people as we could for less than half the price of a pear brought from the mainland of Japan and for free to the poor.
I obeyed his voice and took them to the supermarket and also gave them away for free to needy families.
Japan is a developed country, but now, due to the spread of the Coronavirus, more children are living in poverty. Instead of eating healthy fruits and vegetables, they are eating cheap processed snacks and their health is suffering.
Our mission is to reach our community with Christian love. One way we do it is by providing healthy fruit to these children and poor single-parent families, while spreading the gospel.
If this is the Lord's will, I would appreciate your prayers and support so that we can continue this work. I'm looking forward to planting and eating grapes in heaven as described in Isaiah 11:6,9.
There, without the use of any pesticides, the grapes are free from pests and diseases, and we can eat as many delicious grapes ad fruit as we want forever.
Of course, we will not suffer from hunger either.
