Son Yeon-woo

손연우

Son Yeon-woo was born in Gwangju in 1992 and graduated from the Department of Contemporary Art & Media at Chosun University’s College of Fine Arts in 2015. She began her work based on traditional woodcut techniques and has recently expanded her practice by combining diverse techniques and materials beyond woodcut.

Using the image of a child as her central motif, her work explores the dual and pretentious aspects of human behavior that emerge in adulthood after the loss of childhood innocence, as well as emotions—such as sadness and confusion—that are distorted and negatively transformed through socialization.

She has participated in programs including the ongoing Daora Exchange Program (2025), the ‘Myosu’ Program at Daein Market (2020–2021), and the Young Artist Support Center at the Gwangju Museum of Art (2019).

Her solo exhibitions include Scenery in the Book, Story in the Painting (Dobo Bookshop, Namwon, 2025), I (Songjeong Small Museum of Art, Gwangju, 2024), and Another Beginning (Juan Museum of Art, Gwangju, 2022). She has also participated in over 30 group exhibitions in Korea and abroad, including the Gwangju International Print Exchange Exhibition (Gwangju Museum of Art, Geumnam-ro Branch, 2025), actively continuing her exhibition activities.

손연우는 1992년 광주에서 태어나 2015년 조선대학교 미술대학 현대조형미디어학과를 졸업했습니다. 전통 목판화 기법을 바탕으로 작업을 시작했으며, 최근에는 다양한 기법과 소재를 결합하여 목판화를 넘어 표현의 영역을 확장하고 있습니다.

아이의 형상을 주요 모티프로 삼아, 어린 시절의 순수함을 잃은 후 어른이 되어 나타나는 인간의 이중적이고 가식적인 모습과, 사회화 과정에서 부정적으로 변질되는 감정—슬픔과 혼란—을 조명합니다.

그녀는 현재 진행 중인 다오라 교환 프로그램(2025)을 비롯해 대인시장 ‘묘수’ 프로그램(2020–2021)과 광주시립미술관 청년예술인지원센터(2019)에 참여하였습니다.

개인전으로는 “책 속의 풍경, 그림 속의 이야기”(남원 도보책방, 2025), “I”(광주 송정작은미술관, 2024), “또 하나의 시작”(광주 주안미술관, 2022) 등이 있으며, “광주국제판화교류전”(광주시립미술관 금남로분관, 2025)을 포함해 국내외 30여 개 단체전에 참여하며 활발히 전시 활동을 이어가고 있습니다.
