You can't review 2020 without the cultural phenomenon that is the "Harry Styles" cardigan.
When this magical musician (at least to teens) wore this particular cardigan during his performance on Good Morning America, he unknowingly started a craze among both the TikTok and knitting/crochet communities.
Heck, even I'm working on my own rendition of the "Harry Styles" cardigan. If you weren't aware, or perhaps forgot due to years of that #adultlife, the hype that is signature of a teenage girl is perhaps the most potent of the hypes. The flame just never dies out until EVERYONE falls in love with x, y , or z as much as she does.
Fast forward to now, and the V&A Museum in London has requested Harry Styles donate his original cardigan to illustrate the "power of creativity and social media in bringing people together in times of extreme adversity. [V&A blog]" The craze became so big that the haute couture brand, J.W. Anderson, that Styles bought from had to give a nod to all of the hard work people around the world were putting into replicating this cardigan.
They provide a free knit pattern of this cardigan here, which I personally think is amazing and generous of the fashion label.
One of the reasons why this cardigan became such a popular home project is how relatively easy it is to make. It's a patchwork design, meaning all you really have to do is knit or crochet a whole lot of different colored squares, and then sew them together into the shape of a cardigan. It's so simple, it's genius really. A lot of sweaters and cardigans are made this way, and it's a great way for a beginner to get acquainted with knitting or crocheting their own clothing.
The basic design of this cardigan is shown below. Among the ways to knit/crochet outerwear, this is among the simplest, meaning it's basically built to be a successful project no matter how you approach it. The same can't be said for something like a yoke-down sweater, for example.
So, is this sweet and simple cardigan a trend or a fad? Well, if we look back on the last time I remember a craze this big (or bigger) ignited by the enthusiasm of teenage girls everywhere, it was the advent of the Twilight films. And that phenomenon will forever be burned into my memory. (For the record, I'm Team Jacob. But only because I was forced to pick a team or suffer the consequences.)
However, I'm glad a chapter has finally closed on THAT phase of pop culture... somewhat.
Given the re-wearability score of 3/10, I'd say the cardigan is a fad. I don't see this cardigan seeing the light of day again after this craze dies down.
However, I do think that this cardigan has great potential to inspire a lot of new cardigan designs with higher re-wearability scores. Just take a look at how some people are already taking this simple design into their own hands. (Links to each image are available)
I think what makes this cardigan not just any old patchwork design are two factors: at least 3 contrasting colors are used and placed evenly around the cardi, and one of the squares must be an "eccentric" pattern, such as the Houndstooth pattern.
So, will you be making your very own "Harry Styles" cardigan today?
Happy crocheting or knitting, folks!
