"Wow, is that a real fern?"
... is what I asked myself when I discovered Miho Fujita's work a little while back. Given the theme of “nature“ from my previous posts, I thought now was a great time to feature this amazing crochet designer.
She is from Japan, specifically the city of Hatagami in the Akita prefecture. The forests near her home greatly inspire her work, since her specialty is nature-inspired thread crochet.
Her process involves using only naturally dyed organic cotton, if she chooses to dye them at all. And if she does use dyed thread, she uses the natural pigments from plants. She gets her inspiration from small things you would find in forests, like berries, leaves, ferns, or clusters of mushrooms.
Ms. Fujita cleans and dyes the cotton herself. This makes her work completely organic and natural. In a sense, it's like her creations are an homage to the beauty you can only find in the natural world.
My favorite piece is the fern earrings. But do check out the rest of her work, as not all of them are included in this post!
Packaging is also important to her artistic process. The boxes look like a botanical display, which just underline what beautiful specimens these pieces are. Even if you don't wear them, leaving them in their boxes is still a lovely statement piece in your home.
For me, working with thread yarn is very challenging. I even struggle finishing a project with sport weight yarn, which is significantly thicker! I need a special magnifying glass when I work with anything that needs anything smaller than a 4mm hook. When I look at Ms. Fujita's work, I see a lot of craftsmanship, patience, and adoration for the forest.
If you’re interested in what Miho Fujita is up to nowadays, she's still active on Instagram, so check her out!
If for some reason you have an interest in her Japanese shop, the link is here too. Though it's all in Japanese.
Happy crocheting, friends!
