Keynote Address
The 2027 Annual Meeting will feature Professor David Poeppel and Professor Benjamin Hayden as keynote speakers. Both are internationally renowned neuroscientists whose research spans hearing, language, music, visual perception, and decision-making. Using neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and mathematical and computational modeling, their works focus on how the brain transforms continuous sensory signals into structured and meaningful mental representations.
Professor David Poeppel investigates how neural oscillations contribute to auditory processing and language comprehension. Advances in neuroimaging and electrophysiology have deepened our understanding of speech processing, from phonemes—the basic units of speech, sometimes described as “little bits”—to larger units such as syllables. Speech unfolds over time and has a rhythmic structure. Neural oscillations may help the brain track and process these temporal patterns. Poeppel’s research sheds light on how the brain extracts structure from continuous speech and transforms sound into linguistic representations.
Professor Benjamin Hayden investigates how the human brain represents meaning. In his research, he recorded the activity of individual neurons in the human hippocampus while participants listened to podcasts. His findings highlight representational geometry as a framework for understanding how populations of neurons encode semantic information. This approach reveals how the human hippocampus represents meaning both within and across languages.

This workshop introduces faculty and students to brainlife.io for neuroimaging data management and analysis, focusing on datasets from the Center for Mesoscale Connectomics and analysis pipelines developed by projects across the NIH BRAIN CONNECTS program.
The lecture will introduce approaches to organizing datasets, running reproducible analyses, and sharing results. It will also demonstrate emerging AI agents being developed through BRAIN CONNECTS, illustrating how conversational interfaces can help researchers discover data, identify tools, and coordinate analysis workflows.
During the hands-on session, participants will follow updated brainlife.io tutorials to access and organize the Center’s datasets, learn how to upload their own data, and launch processing workflows. Examples will include established tools such as FreeSurfer, fMRIPrep, and QSIPrep, alongside specialized pipelines developed by BRAIN CONNECTS projects. Prepared outputs will support exploration of longer analyses. Participants will gain practical experience managing and analyzing connectomics data, supported by tutorials they can subsequently use in their research and teaching.
