Writing a summary

Why do I need to write a summary?

As a college student, you will need to not only read articles and academic papers, but also respond to them in writing. Before you can start picking apart the author’s argument or adding your own opinions, however, you need to introduce your reader to the piece you have read and the author who wrote it. You need to show them you have understood the piece, and summarize it for those who have not read the piece themselves.

What makes a summary good?

A good summary...

• Correctly identifies the main idea of the article and states it clearly.

• Includes major details while leaving out minor details.

• Is organized logically.

• Paraphrases instead of plagiarizing.
