"Underwater Birds" was released on August 11 and experiments with ambient sound, complex tempo, and improvisation.
Often, my songs contain a strict tempo, but recently, I've been experimenting with tempo-less songs. The advantage of a tempo-less song is that you can express more emotion through the articulations that you are usually unable to create due to the tight control of songs with a consistent tempo. The disadvantage is the loss of quantization.
The solos throughout the second half of the song are all improvised.
Few people may have noticed that the song is actually on a microtonal scale (by 50 cents), making it virtually impossible to play on most pianos. If you want to learn the song yourself without having to detune your entire piano, you can play over this tuned version of the song.
