Summer Camp 2015

Dear Scouts and Parents,

I’m going to manage the sign-up process for summer camp merit badge (MB) sessions a bit differently this year. Rather than pin down the scouts at meetings, I’m asking them to think about which merit badges they want to take and to enter their schedule on a shared spreadsheet. In order for you to assist your scout with this task, here is a suggested approach.

  1. Take a look at the Leader’s Guide for the camp(s) that your scout is going to attend.
  2. Find out which merit badges your scout would like to take.
  3. Fill in your scout’s selections on the shared spreadsheet

Links to the information and sign-up sheets follow:

Camp Raven Knob (RK)

Please log into the Members Only section to access the sign up sheet, or see Margaret’s email – Feel free to add a row if your scout’s name is not already listed. You will need to Open the spreadsheet before you can add information.

The Leaders Guide – There is information about the merit badges, suggested scout ages and prerequisites in this guide. Of particular importance is the list of MB Registration Codes on pages 46 and 47. You’ll need to enter the code and MB name on the spreadsheet.

Camp Daniel Boone (DB)

Please log into the Members Only section to access the sign up sheet, or see Margaret’s email – Feel free to add a row if your scout’s name is not already listed. You will need to Open the spreadsheet before you can add information.

The Leaders Guide – Contains information about the merit badges, suggested scout ages and prerequisites

The Parents Guide – This one is written just for you!

The merit badge schedule – A stand-alone spreadsheet with the merit badge schedule. Click on the link on the Camp Daniel Boone main page.

Following are some suggestions that may be helpful:

  • First time campers should consider taking the Raven Scouts at RK (morning program) or Goin Great at DB (advancement in morning; pioneering and first aid in afternoon). The programs focus on advancement through to second class.
  • Second class scouts attending Raven Knob should consider taking Senior Raven Scouts which will get them through most of the requirements for first class.
  • Choose a variety of sessions in different areas (i.e. aquatics, handicraft, scoutcraft, ecology)
  • Scouts who are 1st class and above should consider taking some of the Eagle required badges. Younger scouts should be doing the MBs that we don’t do as a troop like beading, kayaking, climbing, etc.
  • Life scouts should concentrate on Eagle required MBs or doing the high adventure options.
  • Older scouts who don’t care about rank advancement should consider the high adventure and backwoods programs which are really fun.
  • The list of merit badges that your scout has already earned is in eTrail to Eagle. Ruth distributed information about how to log in several months ago. Please contact Ruth directly if you need login information.

Please let either Ann Glover or me know if you have any questions. It would be wonderful if you could complete your scout’s entry in the spreadsheet by April 8. The merit badge registrations systems at the camps open in early April. I want to register the scouts early so that they get their preferred MB sessions.

Best regards, Margaret
