POPCORN UPDATE

The purpose of a scout selling popcorn is to promote salesmanship skills, financial management, and setting goals.

Looking ahead to the coming weekends, we plan to add some additional sites and shifts for next weekend and beyond.

Please keep checking the app and sign up...we need each scout to work at least 3 shifts!

If your scout will be around the weekend of the Welcome Back Trip and would like to work a shift (or more!), please email me ASAP so that I can see how many shifts I need to create for that weekend.

Reminder that all scouts are expected to work a minimum of three shifts over the course of the fundraiser. Shifts can only be secured through the Trail's End app, so please take a moment to set up an account and sign up for any open shifts.

If you are opening a shift, you will need to retrieve materials from the locker, and if you are closing a shift down, you will need to return the materials to the locker.

Please reach out with any questions - jpeterkin831@gmail.com

Volunteer Help Needed

Can YOU help organize THIS?

Maintain a calendar of Troop 512 Pennsylvania certification requirements and youth protection training.

It's an especially important job that requires little time, but a sense of the calendar.

Responsibilities include:

(a) catalog and make certain scoutmasters are certified every two years for scheduled youth protection services as well as presenting their PA certifications to you when due.

(b) communicating timelines to scoutmasters and assistant scoutmasters.

(c) communicating with active parents to pursue PA certs as well.

***By the way, there is TRAINING AVAILABLE AND much of this paperwork is organized and being done already.***

The current volunteer is "taking on new responsibilities" and needs to pass this on.

Check out Wildlife Wednesdays

From August to December each year thousands of raptors or birds of prey pass through Pennsylvania on their way south. During this time, raptors can be commonly seen flying along the ridges of the Appalachian mountain, which provide upward currents that give the birds lift. There are many locations to watch migrating raptors in Pennsylvania, like Waggoner’s Gap along the border of Cumberland and Perry Counties. Find more locations here https://bit.ly/33lRKCc.

While visiting these locations, watch for Northern Goshawks, whose southward migration in November provides a unique opportunity to view this secretive bird. Goshawks are large blue-gray raptors who prefer to nest deep in Pennsylvania’s forests. Goshawks were never considered a common species in Pennsylvania and reports suggest goshawk populations are declining. In fact, goshawks are identified as a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Pennsylvania’s Wildlife Action Plan through breeding, migratory, and winter seasons due to range wide concerns for the species and Pennsylvania’s role in supporting these magnificent birds at all stages of their annual cycle.

Help us learn more about this declining species by emailing your goshawk sighting to the Pennsylvania Goshawk Project at pgcgoshawk@pa.gov. The Pennsylvania Goshawk Project (run by a subcommittee of the Ornithological Technical Committee of the Pennsylvania Biological Survey in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Game Commission) collects reports of goshawk sightings throughout the state. Reports are confidential to protect the birds.
