An epic speedrunning guide for Super Mario games
Super Mario Wonder, the newest 2-dimensional installment in the Super Mario series, is an amazing game, with amazing capabilities. The game has badges, which can help a lot in the run, like the Jet Run or Fast Dash badges. Using these, you can go a lot faster. With that, the speedrun will be a lot easier.
Bowsers Fury is an official add-on to Super Mario 3D World that was released on the switch to officially port the 3-dimensional world to that system. It involves very fast movement, and surprisingly, motion controls! Using motion controls, you can move Bowser Jr., who can help collect coins, defeat enemies, and even collect Cat Shine Shards for you.
These mechanics need to be done fast though, because the game runs on a time based system in which you can only fight bowser after a certain amount of time so a slight mistake could end the whole run. This game also has the returning Super Bell power up that transforms Mario into a cat, once again. There is a bigger version of the Super Bell, called the Giga Bell. Collecting the Giga Bell results in a cutscene, of cat mario, progressively getting bigger because of the bell. After the cutscene ends, Fury Bowser appears, and you have to defeat him by using the cat swipe, or ground pounding on his belly.
At the end of the game, you ride Plessie as Bowser takes all 3 Giga Bells and you have to hit them into his belly 3-4 in order to defeat Bowser and save Lake Lapcat. The game is honestly an amazing speedrun and the newest 3-dimensional installment to the Super Mario series.
Super Mario Odyssey is one of the most recent installments in the 3-dimensional Mario franchise. It is considered to be one of the best Super Mario games, but along with it's great popularity, it also has a large speedrunning community. In mario odyessy the player must collect moons to progress so in the speedrun it is very important to find routes to collect moons. In this game Mario's companion Cappy is very crucial in a speedrun, as most of this game's speedrun involves movement and Cappy allows Mario to use new jumps, Bouncing midair and more.
I recommend watching SmallAnt1's video on movement in Mario Odyssey, he is a well known speedrunner and streamer for Odyssey and other games too, and the link to the video will be shown below. Along with the Any% category, there are many other categories played such as Minimal captures and 100% which stray from the original any% category. The movement is very fun and unique in Odyssey which is a very fun speedrun.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is one of the more unique Super Mario games. The goal of the game is to save Toadette, or Captain Toad, and pick up treasure along the way. The main antagonist in the game is Wingo, who kidnapped Toadette in the first place. There are 3 gems in each level, and 1 star in each level. When speedrunning Captain Toad, you will still need to pick up gems to unlock levels, so it's not as easy as just getting the star. Picking up all gems would be the best idea, so that you have enough to get to the next levels!
Super Mario 3D World is a iconic Super Mario game, as you can move in 3-dimensions, but in a similar style to the original Super Mario Bros. game. The 3-dimensional game has a returning mechanic, originally from Super Mario Bros.Warping lets you warp to future worlds in this game, but, it splits the speedrun into two categories, Any% (MC) and Any% (Warpless).
Movements; similar to Odyssey Movement are very important. There is also a Multiplayer category for 3d world wich has a slower time. One very important thing in 3D world is the Super Bell. with the Super Bell, you can climb up walls and cat-swipe enemies. It can help with movement in this game and is very useful. The player must collect green stars to progress through the game. With all of this in such a great game combines to make a amazing speedrun.
This speedrun is very similar to 3d world but there is a few differences, the first one is that in this game instead of the cat mario, the tanooki Mario is used, the movment is still very extreme, but another difference is 3D Land is played on a Nintendo 3DS system which is very different than playing on a Wii U or Nintendo Switch. Along with that 3D Land has star coins instead of green stars included in the game.
The game includes hidden Toads that you can receive star coins from if you zoom in on them using a telescope that zooms in whenever you press R on your 3DS system, and zooms out whenever you press L on your handheld.
This game does include warps, however, which again, causes the categories to split! This is one of the rare speedruns that allows runners to use an emulator, though that is a less popular way to do it, suffice to say, 3D Land is a great speedrun.
Super Mario Galaxy is the second best selling 3-dimensional Mario game, and it definitely deserves that title, if it isn't the stunning galaxies that get it might be the motion controls. The speedrun involves the player collecting star bits and stars to progress as fast as they can, that's where the motion controls come in, you have to use the motion controls to collect star bits with Mario.
Overall, Galaxy is one of the longest Mario speedruns, seeing as the world record isn't even under 2 hours, but if you have the time to do it, this is a great game to speedrun.
Galaxy was so good, that they had to make a sequel, but though there aren't very many differences between the two games, one is that Yoshi is now a crucial part of the game. Green stars were added to the game, however, making the speedrun longer, clocking in at about just under 3 hours.
Though, if you like the original Mario Galaxy, you'll definitely like Galaxy 2 even better, with all the new things, this game is a astounding classic to speedrun!
Super Mario Sunshine introduces a ton of new characters, on the great console, the Nintendo GameCube. One of the main new characters, is F.L.U.D.D.. Mario, Peach, and the Toads go on a vacation to Isle Delfino, where Peach gets kidnapped by Shadow Mario, one of the main antagonists. The game introduces Shines, which are essentially Stars.
In the 27 years since the release of super Mario 64 speedrunners have been able to beat it in under 30 minutes... blindfolded. If you don't believe me, you can check it out on the official speedrunning website itself. Super Mario 64 is not only the one of the most popular 3-dimensional Super Mario game, but it was also the first one to do so. It is also one of the most popular games in the world to speedrun. It revolutionized speedruning and has some of the most iconic tricks and glitches ever, like the BLJ. The BLJ, or backwards long jump, is very iconic, indeed, it utilizes an oversight that the developers added in which Mario has no limit to his backwards momentum.
By long jumping backwards into a staircase, and then continuously long jumping backwards on each step Mario can clip through doors and objects. Also, due to the fact that there are many stars in this game, there are categories for collecting amounts of stars, for example, 60 stars, or possibly even more than that. Suffice to say, Super Mario 64 is one of the most iconic runs in the history of speedrunning, and it was a revolutionary game for all of the video game industries.

Super Mario Bros. is the first game in the series, which makes it one of the most major of them all. In the game, you can only play as Mario and Luigi. (two-player exclusive) The game has 8 worlds, with 4 levels each. In world 1-2, at the end, if you go into the right area, you can get to the warp pipes. Said warp pipes can warp you to World 4, 3, or 2. During a speedrun, World 4 would be the best option. When you get to World 4, there is another Warp Zone, at level 4-2. From there, you can warp to World 6, 7, or 8. Warping to World 8 would, again, be the best option. From World 8, there are no more Warp Zones. Because of this, play the game normally, but fast-paced. At World 8-4, the final step is to beat Bowser. Overall, this game is great, and revolutionary to the Super Mario series. If you're feeling like playing a classic game, this is a great game to try.
