Find your passport fee in one of three ways:Use the fee calculatorDownload the fee chart PDF, orExpand the boxes on this page. Our fees on this page are for customers applying in the United States and renewing by mail from Canada. If you need to apply for or renew your U.S. passport in another country, visit the webpage of the U.S. embassy or consulate.

If you paid the $60 fee for expedited service when you applied and you did not receive expedited service, you may be eligible to request a refund of this fee. We cannot refund any other passport fees or your travel expenses if you miss your trip.

Applying for a U.S. passport outside the United States is different than inside the United States. Most customers must go to a U.S. embassy or consulate. If you live in Canada, you may be eligible to renew by mail.

Alert: Please use our online scheduler, a Post Office lobby self-service kiosk, or visit a Post Office retail counter to make an appointment for first-time passport and photo services. Alternatively, find a location near you with passport walk-in acceptance hours.

First-time passport applications have two types of basic fees, the application acceptance fee and the application processing fee. Passport photos and fees for faster processing are extra. Learn how to calculate fees and what you can use to pay for them.

If you are eligible to renew your passport, please complete Passport Renewal Application Form DS-82 (see completion instructions on the form), and mail your completed renewal application directly to the State Department for processing. To verify if your passport is eligible for renewal by mail, please visit State Department Renew By Mail.

A minor's passport may not be renewed by mail; to renew a minor's passport, you need to submit a new, first-time passport application in person. An adult passport may be renewed by mail if it meets certain requirements.

Apply early for renewals as many countries require that passports be valid for at least 6 months after you enter their country. Learn how to properly prepare your application package and include all the necessary documents so your passport is processed on time.

If you need your passport faster for emergency travel or another special case, you can send your passport application via Priority Mail Express service and pay the State Department fee for faster delivery.

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell has amended the restriction on the use of U.S. passports for travel to, in, or through Iraq by certain U.S. citizens providing humanitarian and other critical services in support of the Iraqi people. The restriction is lifted for those people conducting humanitarian activities subject to a specific license issued by the Office of Foreign Assets Control; those conducting humanitarian activities funded by the United States; personnel of the United Nations and its agencies; or U.S. Government personnel and contractors on official assignment in Iraq. The passport restriction was amended to simplify the travel of staff of organizations designated to deliver critical goods and services urgently needed by the Iraqi people. The Secretary is taking this step to enable these organizations to bring urgently needed humanitarian and reconstruction aid to Iraq. General travel conditions in Iraq are still extremely hazardous for Americans. The Iraq Consular Information Sheet and Travel Warning on the Consular Affairs website (www.travel.state.gov) describe the risks in detail. The restriction on use of U.S. passports to travel to, in or through Iraq otherwise remains in place until the Secretary determines such travel is safe for Americans. U.S. passports are not valid for travel to, in or through Iraq, unless they are validated by the Department of State. The only exceptions are the passports of journalists on assignment in Iraq, U.S. citizens residing in Iraq as of February 8, 1991, and those of humanitarian workers affected by this amended restriction.

All other passport rules and regulations remain in effect. The Department of Homeland Security maintains discretion to reject any passport bearer in accordance with 22 CFR 53.2(b)(7) and 8 CFR 235.1(b).

Please be advised that urgent travel back to the United States may be accomplished on an expired passport that qualifies, but the individual will need to renew their U.S. passport, most commonly by mail, in the United States before they can depart the United States again. For planning purposes, domestic routine passport processing times are currently 8 to 11 weeks. In-person appointments at some domestic passport agencies and centers are possible but limited at this time and generally reserved for emergency life/death cases or travelers departing within a prescribed number of days. For an additional $60, domestic applicants can request expedited service to receive a passport within the number of business days published on

Passports, citizenship, and birth registration services are by appointment only. Due to COVID-19 precautions, passport appointments are available for U.S. citizen minors and emergencies only. U.S. citizen adults should mail-in their passport renewal applications following the instructions below.

While OFAC sanctions do not prohibit U.S. persons from traveling to or from North Korea, as of September 1, 2017, U.S. passports are invalid for travel into, in, or through North Korea. However, in limited circumstances, applicants may be eligible for a Special Validation Passport from the State Department that will allow them to travel for specific purposes. See travel.state.gov for additional details. U.S. persons who intend to travel to North Korea via a Special Validation Passport do not require OFAC authorization to engage in activities that are exempt pursuant to 50 U.S.C.  1702(b), such as travel to or from any country or the importation or exportation of informational materials. All other activities outside the scope of this exemption would require a specific license from OFAC, unless otherwise authorized by OFAC. See, for example, FAQ 558 for additional information regarding news reporting organizations and journalists.

ASSISTANT SECRETARY RISCH: And this is Carl Risch. I would add that in June the State Department began a phased resumption of routine passport processing in phases across the country. Our dedicated team of passport professionals have begun to return to our facilities in substantial numbers. We have surged staffing and resources from other consular operations to address this critical need around passports. e24fc04721
