TravelJournalApp ("the app") is a travel journaling app built around one core idea: your travel memories and location data belong to you, not to a server. This policy explains what the app does and does not do with your information.
TravelJournalApp does not have user accounts, logins, or a backend server.
Your journal entries, photos, videos, and trip data are stored only on your device.
We never collect, transmit, or sell your personal data.
Location is only ever recorded when you explicitly choose to place a pin — it is never automatically tracked, and it is never included when you share a photo or story from the app.
All journal entries, trip details, photos, and videos you add to the app are saved locally in the app's private storage on your device. Nothing is uploaded to a server or cloud account operated by us. If you uninstall the app or delete its data, this information is gone — there is no copy stored anywhere else on our end.
The app never tracks your location automatically. Location is only recorded when you take one of these explicit actions:
Placing a pin on a trip using "Use Current Location" or "Choose on Map"
Placing a pin on an entry you've tagged as a "Hidden Gem"
When you use "Use Current Location," the app also performs on-device reverse geocoding (converting coordinates into a readable place name like "Portland, OR") using your phone's built-in location services (provided by Google on Android or Apple on iOS). This is handled by your device's operating system, not by us.
Location data is stored locally with your trip, exactly like your journal entries. Location is never included in anything you share from the app — photos, stories, and collages you share only contain the media and text you've chosen, never coordinates or place names.
Map screens in the app display map tiles from OpenFreeMap, a free and open mapping service. Loading a map tile requires a standard network request, which — like any map service — necessarily shares your device's IP address and the general area you're viewing with that service in order to return the correct map imagery. The app also caches map tiles locally for trips you've visited, so previously viewed areas can be displayed without a new network request.
When you add a photo or video, the app uses your device's own photo/camera picker to let you choose what to add — the app is only ever given access to the specific items you select, never your entire photo library. Selected media is copied into the app's private local storage and is never uploaded anywhere.
The app uses Sentry, a third-party crash-reporting service, to help us catch and fix bugs. If the app crashes or encounters an unexpected error, technical details (like a stack trace and basic device information) are sent to Sentry. We've configured this to exclude personally identifiable information. This is the only data that ever leaves your device without a direct action from you (like placing a pin or loading a map).
The app includes an optional link to a tip jar (Ko-fi) in Settings. Tapping it opens Ko-fi's website in your browser, outside of the app. We don't control and aren't responsible for Ko-fi's own privacy practices — see their policy if you choose to visit.
TravelJournalApp is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
