The main goal of EMT is fully in line with the EU priorities for higher education: improve the quality of translator training in order to enhance the labour market integration of young language professionals. The EMT competence framework, drawn up by European experts, is at the core of the project. It defines the basic competences that translators need to work successfully in today's market. More and more universities, also beyond the EU, use it as a model for designing their programmes.

As an EMT member your institution will benefit from a partnership with DG Translation including access to short term training placements for your students (depending on the availability in the language departments). You will also benefit from the collective efforts of the network to achieve the following objectives:

In order to realise the above-mentioned goals the EMT members hold regular network meetings to exchange best practices and to cooperate on concrete projects with a view to innovating their curricula and teaching methods. They have also established close cooperation ties with the language industry to stay abreast of the latest developments affecting the translator training (for instance regarding tools and technology, traineeships, employers' expectations).

In our MA program in Translation and Interpreting, taught by a faculty that features accomplished translators and interpreters, you will develop the academic and professional skills this field demands.

With the assistance of language support experts from the School of Literatures, Cultures, and Linguistics (SLCL), our core faculty currently guide translation and interpreting practice and research in the following language pairs: English + Arabic, Basque, Catalan, Chinese, Czech, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian.

Translators in the program focus on creating works that can convey the distinctness of the original languages and the immediacy of contemporary languages, whether poetry, fiction, or drama. Students consider ideas of literariness, style, cultural politics, authority, and how these come into play in the relationships between authors and their texts, authors and translators, translations and readers, and in the media landscapes in which these circulate.

At the core of the M.F.A. program are the workshops, TRNS:7460 - Translation Workshop, IWP:5205 - International Translation Workshop, and TRNS:6555 - Translator in Residence Workshop, which every student must take for a minimum of 12 s.h. of credit. Depth in the literature and culture of the source language, creative writing (translation is considered a writing art), translation theory and history, and contemporary literary theory are basic curricular requirements, supplemented with elective courses in which students may develop an area of special interest in consultation with their advisors.

My current level of Japanese is around JLPT N3, and I feel that I still have a lot of grammar, a lot of vocabulary to learn, and that my language skills must improve much more if I want to be a translator one day.

I took every Japanese language class offered at my university (one of my majors was Asian Studies, there was no Japanese major) and came out in a similar situation - JLPT 3kyu (though this was before the restructuring of the test) but unable to have a natural conversation. I moved to Japan after graduating and my listening comprehension was TERRIBLE but it turns out I had a good foundation and things came more easily to me as time went on.

The MA in Translation requires thirty-two credits that can be completed in three or four semesters of full-time study and prepares students for careers as professional translators with companies or as freelancers or for further graduate study at the doctoral level.

Driven by the ever-greater reliance of business, industry, and governments on translation, the demand for professionals with strong translation skills is now higher than ever. Well-trained translators are employed in a wide spectrum of positions, both with translation companies and as direct hires in a wide-variety of industries. Students who complete the MA in Translation are well-prepared to fill this growing need.

Along with translation and translation studies, our faculty specialize in areas such as linguistics, literature, race and gender theory, and area studies for languages such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Korean, Japanese and Spanish.

Just to clarify my understanding of your issue - you have a page with a content area which isn't culture specific and hence the items in that content area can only be controlled in the master language for that page. When editors go to that page in a language other than the master language they see the content rendered on the page but can't click on the menu in the corner of a block to edit the block.

The MFA in Literary Translation features a balance between extensive, hands on and collaborative training in the art and practice of literary translation, and theoretical studies on translation and coursework in source language, literature and cultures.
