Section I: " Side-by-side stance" type of postures
Explanation:
Use the side-by-side stance with various kinds of postures for which the side-by-side type is suitable. Base the decision to use this type of stance on the primary application that is desired, using the following pictures and descriptions as a guide.
The side-by-side stance applications are:
1. Used to assist the footwork when advancing forward or retreating backward [as part of a more complex footwork choreography].
2. Used to get closer to an opponent when employing a punch, upward drilling, or downward planting fist. Also use the footwork with push aside, pluck and lift up Yin [upward groin strike] , piercing stab, and pushing press.
(1) Side-by-side stance with forward charging fist
1. Action:
(a) Side-by-side with right charging fist:
From the "attention posture", separate the heels about a half Chinese foot (1/6 meter) to end in a side-by-side stance. Bend both legs slightly, with the knees close to each other. Keep the center of gravity centered between both feet. Stretch the left hand in front of the chest and grasp it into a fist. Then withdraw it to the waist, ending in a Yang fist with the tip of the elbow hitting to the rear. At the same time, move the right fist forward, going from the side of the waist, passing over the left hand, and finally punching forward to end in a standing fist or perhaps a Yin fist. The right shoulder follows to be somewhat forward, and the right fist is at shoulder level and [centered] on a line beneath the bridge of the nose [i.e., in line with the center of the head, but at shoulder level not nose level]. Sink the shoulder and drop the elbow with the wrist straight. Finish the posture as shown in Figure (3).
(b) When doing side-by-side stance with left charging fist, it is the same as in part (a), only with left and right reversed.
2. Use or Application:
Meet the opponent up-close and continuously hit the chest or abdomen.
3. Essential points:
The crown of the head is pushing upward. Sink the shoulders and drop the elbows. Sink the Qi to the dan-tian, and sink the waist jìng downward. Send the end of the fist [knuckles] forward and down with force.
[Note: A Chinese foot is 1/3 of a meter, i.e., 1 meter is equal to 3 Chinese feet. So one half of a Chinese foot is 1/6 of a meter. Also, the use of the term 沖拳 or "charging fist" throughout the translation refers to a straight, powerful punch with the fist, like water rushing out of a fire hose.]

At the same time, punch upward with the right fist, passing it between the chest and the inside of the left hand. Face the tiger's mouth towards the rear, and look out level to the front. Finish the posture as shown in Figure (4).
(b) When doing side-by-side stance with left upward drilling fist, it is the same as in part (a), only with left and right reversed.
2. Use or Application:
When the opponent attacks near the front or side of the body and it is too late to dodge the attack, then I promptly use one hand to push and press the opponent's hand. At the same time, I use the other hand grasped into a fist to drill and strike the opponent's lower jaw or upper section [of the body].
3. Essential points:
Straighten the chest and drop the waist, sinking the Qi to the dan-tian. When the fist drills upward, the body squats downward slightly.

At the same time, I use the other hand, after flipping the fist over, to plant a strike down to the opponent's abdomen or groin.

At the same time, change the left fist to a vertical palm and push horizontally across in front of the chest, attaching it to the inside of the upper right arm. Point the four fingers [of the left hand] upward and look at the right hand. Finish the posture as in Figure (6).

If an opponent is coming in to strike from the front, I use one hand to push the opponent's hand aside [i.e., the left hand pushes the incoming hand aside], while at the same time using the other palm to lift up and strike the opponent's groin.
3. Essential points:
Crown of the head pushing upward. Sink the shoulders and drop the elbows. Empty the chest and tighten the back. Sink the Qi to the dan-tian, and sink the waist jìng downward. Coordinate all of the movements as one.
[Note: Many movements described with the phrase "lifting Yin palm" are not talking about the palm in the Yin position (that is, the Yin palm facing downward as opposed to Yang palm facing up.). It instead refers to a groin strike, sometimes called "scoop the groin palm". In TCM, the groin area is where there is the greatest concentration of Yin energy, sometimes called the "Yin-bu". If you use the palm to lift up and strike this area, you are "lifting the Yin-bu with the palm".]
