Chapter 2. Remembering the Kindness of Unforgettable Parents

I feel blessed that God gave me a good family, even before I was born. [It started] from my paternal grandfather, Chen Jinhuan, who was industrious and frugal, [so that] the family's financial circumstances prospered. [Then], my father, Chen Zijian, inherited this grand beginning, and [subsequently] greatly raised the family’s reputation [even further].

My father had a tall and sturdy figure, with a strong sense of intelligence and few ambitions. When he was first learning to read and compose an essay, it was not easy for his teacher to say a [bad] word, and he was greatly praised. Since inheriting his family business, he tried his best to manage it, traveling the road north and south that linked the [family] fields.

Through three generations, there was only one male heir per generation. Although the family was prosperous, the [number of males in the family] was small. So after plowing the fields and studying, a martial arts master staying at the home would train [him] in order to strengthen [the family's] defense. This fact was well known in the area, and burglars would not approach [the house].

My father was public spirited, served the homeland, promoted its interests and eliminated difficulties [that arose]. He spared no pains in order to do his utmost. In remote villages, there are always stupid words spoken between brothers. His words were often used to solve such disputes.

[My] mother, who was from the Kang family, was a virtuous, kind-hearted woman, who showed compassion for widows and orphans, as well as helping the poor and sick. She tried to care for the old and young. She was respected as "Old Bodhisattva" because she helped people who were suffering!

All of this was passed down to their family, including four sons and five daughters. The so-called "prosperity comes from people" means that God blesses good people! I was the third son, and I went to school with my brothers and sisters. Because I was able to "burn the pear" among my brothers and sisters [i.e., share with siblings], I was able to enjoy the blessings of my family. Therefore, I was fortunate to be born in the auspicious home of a good man.

Although my family was wealthy, it had an unpretentious manner. Even though we were eager for public interest and justice, we were not worried about spending money if needed.

At home, it was plain and simple…no smoking, drinking or gambling. My parents paid attention to their children, but although they loved each other, the education from father was also [taken] quite seriously. I served by my father's side from a young age, only assisting like a carp, blindly following what he was doing. Therefore, I have been able to follow my father's training all of my life, and I am inspired by his sincerity.

Pan Chi, my eldest brother (later known as Feng Chi), graduated from National Peking University with majors in mathematics and physics. He has been engaged in education and charity his entire life. My second eldest brother, Pan Zhen, assisted with the household duties after graduating from high school. Pan Lang, the youngest brother, graduated from National Polytechnic University, engaging in education and industry. I also graduated from Peking University, where I majored in Civil Engineering.

My father sired me, and my mother raised me, looked after me, comforted me and educated me. I wish to repay their kindness, but the heavens are so vast! Our generation is blessed by our parents, and we "can't wear the clothes of old Lai" [i.e., story of "old Lai" represents filial devotion of an old man to his even older parents]. They are truly unforgettable!
