一二 樹大招風
因北洋政府歷年都是在軍閥派系權力爭奪的更迭下，而我始終為國家民族的利益，獻身革命工作。在北洋大學時，因領導五四運動，已屢觸當道之忌，甫畢業歸來，即創辦水利工程測繪學校，任實業廳技正，一中校長，淇縣縣長，並且一方面提倡國術，訓練青年；一方面發展組織，團結青年。而在當時習武術者視為亂階，素來禁止；即組織國民黨，亦多事秘密活動，以致引起人之神秘覺，進而嫉妒中傷。
在民國十四年(卅四歲)，任一中校長時，吳佩孚討共，不知相信誰人的讒言，說我是共產黨的首領，當時飭河南教育廳某廳長特別偵查，結果不但找不出共產黨證據，且知我是國民黨中的重要人物，而與共產黨奮鬥最烈者。
可笑當時的軍閥，天真得可憐，連國共兩黨，始終處在對立，壁壘分明，而他竟分不清晰，還幸那位自封為虎威將軍的，還沒有冒失地直接採取行動，先行使人偵查，才弄出個水清石出。不然，難免落得冤哉枉也。
國十五年，奉軍佔領河南開封，我被邏騎追蹤，逃脫至天津趁輪到上海。在五月，北伐革命軍與閰錫山軍攻入河南，我由上海到南京奉中央命，仍回河南省從事黨務工作。

12. A Tall Tree Attracts the Wind
[i.e., A Famous Person Attracts Criticism]
Because the Beiyang government had been in flux due to the struggle among warlords over the years, and [because] I have always devoted myself to the interest of the country and the nation, I [chose to] dedicate myself to revolutionary work.
When I was at Beiyang University, I was in charge of the May 4th movement, which repeatedly stirred up resentment. After graduating, [I helped] establish the School of Surveying and Mapping for Water Conservancy Project, worked in the Industrial [Engineering Works] Department, was principal at the No. 1 Middle School, and was appointed Head Commissioner for Qi County.
Furthermore, on the one hand I advocated for a national martial art and training young people. On the other hand, I believed we should develop organizations and unite young people. However, at that time, practicing martial arts was regarded as disruptive and was always prohibited. When the Nationalist Party [KMT] was formed, I was involved in many covert operations to such an extent as to create an air of mystery [about me], which lead to jealousy and slander.
In the 14th year of the Republic [~1925] (when I was 34 years old), I was principal of the No. 1 Middle School, and [General] We Peifu was looking for the Communist Party. I don’t know who reported falsely, but they said that I was the head of the Communist Party. At that time, the director of the Henan Education Department made a special investigation [into the matter]. The result [of the investigation] not only found no evidence of my involvement with the Communist Party, but it also made known that I was an important figure in the Nationalist Party and one of the people who fought the hardest against the Communist Party.
The ridiculous warlords at the time were pitifully naïve. The Nationalist Party and the Communist Party were always opposed to each other. The differences were clear, but he could not see the differences. Fortunately, the self proclaimed “General of Tiger's Might" had not yet acted rashly and directly. First, there had been a personal investigation that “showed the stones appearing in clear water” [i.e., made the situation clear]. Otherwise, it would have been hard to avoid being blamed unjustly.
In the 15th year of the Republic [~1926], Feng [Guozhang’s] army occupied Kaifeng in Henan Province. I encountered [one of their] patrols and escaped on horseback, running away until I arrived in Tianjin and then Shanghai. In May of that year, the Northern Expeditionary Revolutionary Army and the Nationalist Party Army invaded Henan Province. I went from Shanghai to Nanjing under the orders of the Central Committee, and then returned to Henan Province to engage in work for the [Nationalist] Party.
