Translation Survey

BEFORE we start...

Please answer this quick background questionnaire (5 minutes) by clicking "Background Questionnaire" button.** This questionnaire will collect background data in order to analyse the responses for Survey 1 and 2. All your answers will be anonymised, and your email will be used to keep track of the surveys you have answered, all accordance with the DCU Ethical Policy (Please, see the Plain Language Statement and Consent Forms at the bottom of this page).

This phase has 2 surveys in total. You will be given an English text and will be asked to answer 'yes' or 'no' if you believe you can translate the sentence *in bold* into your mother tongue. ¹ For every 'no' answer, you will be given a few reasons why not. You do not need to do the surveys in order, but please, do both of them! Click the buttons below to start the surveys.

Please use the same email address for all the surveys. If you have participated in the previous phase, please use the same email address as before.

¹You will not be asked to type the translation but instead to try and think of the translation of the English sentence in bold given the context. Please, note that by 'confident' we mean that you would be completely sure of that translation, where there are no room for ambiguities in terminology, tense, case, gender, etc. For example, for some languages adjectives have gender. Therefore the sentence "I am tall" cannot really be translated with 100% certainty because we would need to know the gender of the pronoun "I" to be able to translate 'tall'. Some languages have cases, so that the sentence "My friend" cannot be translated without more information. Same for ambiguity -- if the sentence "makes sense" to be translated with different translations of the word/term, do not assume just one if the information is not clearly given in the source. So please, do not assume gender, case, term, or anything.
