For decades now, we are witnessing dramatic changes in how we communicate with each other through the emergence of connected networks and personal smart devices. In the next step of human evolution, Transhumanism suggests we will be integrated with technology, becoming new species, cyborgs. Through this integration, we will gain new cognitive, physical, sensory and emotional abilities. Such technologies as brain-machine interfaces, in-body sensors, robotic limbs, and sensory and physical augmentations are no longer just a matter of science fiction, but these technologies are on the horizon of what humanity will design, develop and engage with.
Gamification Group invites you to a workshop series on the Speculative Design of Transhuman Communication Technologies. In this workshop series, we aim to bring together people from different disciplines and expertise in order to understand the design of body-augmentation technologies for communicative and expressive purposes. We plan to engage with the different aspects of body augmentation (sensory, physical, cognitive and emotional) in first four workshops and then try to synthesize them into concrete concepts and fictional scenarios within the last two workshops.
Through speculative design activities such as bodystorming, prototyping and role-playing, the "Transhuman Communication Technologies" workshops will shed light on the potential implications about how the body can be augmented with technology to enable new modes of communication and the impact on individuals and society if widespread adoption of these technologies were to take place.
Interested participants will need to attend 3 full-day workshops between 23 Jan - 2 Feb.
Each participant will select and attend one of the four Atom workshops each one of which will be focusing on one theme about transhuman technologies: Sensory, Physical, Cognitive and Emotional augmentation of the human body. In the atom workshops, the attendees will form groups and ideate communication technologies related to the theme of the workshop. After the atom workshops, all participants will take part both in the Synthesis and Fusion workshops to create concrete concepts and fictions, as well as discussing the concepts' potential impact on individuals and society through role-playing activities.
The workshops will be conducted at Tampere University - Central Campus. You can find the dates of the individual workshops below.
23 January 2023 - 10:00-17:00 - Atom WS1 (Sensory Augmentation)*
25 January 2023 - 10:00-17:00 - Atom WS2 (Physical Augmentation)*
27 January 2023 - 10:00-17:00 - Atom WS3 (Cognitive Augmentation) *
30 January 2023 - 10:00-17:00 - Atom WS4 (Emotional Augmentation) *
1 February 2023 - 10:00-17:00 - Synthesis Workshop*
2 February 2023 - 10:00-17:00 - Fusion Workshop *
* Please remember that interested participants will need to attend 3 of the full-day workshops presented above. They will need to choose and attend one (of four) Atom WS. In addition to the atom workshop, all participants will take part in the Synthesis and Fusion workshops.
--> The workshop is open for the participation of students, academics and experts from variety of backgrounds:
FICTION CREATORS - (i.e., RPG players/game masters, creative writers)
DESIGNERS/DEVELOPERS - (i.e., Information & communication technologies, Social Technologies)
EXPERTS in TRANSHUMANISM - (i.e., brain-machine interfaces, smart prosthesis, in-body technologies, bio-hacking, extreme body modifications, human cognition, anatomy, emotion-regulation and sensory processing) and
OTHERS - anyone who has interests in designing the future of (trans)human communication.
If you are a Tampere University student and you want to take part in the workshops, please remember to enroll in the course through SISU: "SDL.681 - Workshop on Speculative Design on Transhuman Communication Technologies".
Please note that the final list of participants will be selected based on the background and expertise of the candidates and announced later by the organizers.
--> Tampere University students will earn up to 3 study credits by attending to the workshops through "SDL.681 - Workshop on Speculative Design on Transhuman Communication Technologies" course.
--> Experts and scholars will earn 50€ gift vouchers for their time! *
*If you reside outside of Tampere (in Finland), the travel expenses might be covered by the organizer. Please contact genc.caglar@tuni.fi for further information.
