Data from the new tracking system now feeds into the Ventra app so that it accurately reflects train departure information. The data also is used in automated audio and visual announcements at train stations. And the data is provided to third-party apps that requested it from Metra.

Yes! The upgrade to our train tracking also included a major upgrade to our customer communications system. That means our Train Reporting and Customer Communications (TRACC) Center can more easily and accurately monitor train operations and can more quickly and reliably communicate issues and changes to our customers at home, on trains and at stations. For instance, TRACC Center workers can send texts to trains and platforms that will instantly be turned into audio announcements and displayed on platform signs.

Hey all! My board is a train tracker powered by an ESP-12F. I posted an earlier version here last week. I read the comments, implemented the suggestions, and reuploading for you guys to take another look.

Download the CVSR Train Tracker app for free on Google Play or the Apple Store. You can track the train in real time, purchase tickets right from your phone and even listen to audio clips on board that detail the historical and natural landmarks you pass!

Over the last few weeks, I was a part of the beta test program for the Train Tracker system launched by the CTA today. I tested this Web-based application on the Red, Brown, and Blue lines in about six different trips (riding multiple trains) using an iPhone, an iPad, and an iMac. My main mobile experience was using my BlackBerry Curve that is about 6 months old.

Train status for all Amtrak routes is shown below. RailRat is currently tracking 35 routes with 53 active trains, zero trains awaiting departure, and 32 completed trains. Click on a route name for more information.

Train status is sourced from Amtrak's excellent Track Your Train Map, which should be considered the authoritative source for train information. This site is not affiliated with Amtrak, and no guarantees are made as to accuracy, timeliness or completeness of the data shown. Please use at your own risk.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The CTA has launched its CTA Train Tracker website, allowing riders to use their computers and smart phones to view estimated arrival times for trains on all eight CTA rail lines.

The website provides estimated arrival times for trains at all 144 CTA train stations on all eight of the agency's rail lines. CTA customers can visit www.transitchicago.com and follow the link on the page to CTA Train Tracker. There is also a mobile version of the program for smart phones.

Customers select their rail line and then choose the station from which they will board the train. Arrival times of approaching trains are provided within a 15-minute timeframe for the selected station -- with results refreshing approximately every 20-30 seconds, according to a news release.

Estimated arrival times are generated through a combination of scheduling information and data collected by the software that monitors the signal system to indicate when a portion of track is occupied by a train.

CTA Train Tracker calculates estimated arrival times by first measuring how long it takes a train to travel a portion of track and then averaging the times of the last five trains to move across a portion of track.

A vast fleet of Starlink satellites orbits Earth, providing internet coverage on a global scale. On a clear night, you may be able to catch a glimpse of a few satellites in this megaconstellation as they crawl across the sky. And if you're lucky enough to see them shortly after deploying, you might even see them appear as a "Starlink satellite train."

Appearing as a string of bright lights in the sky, Starlink trains can look rather "otherwordly" and have prompted numerous UFO-sighting reports when they first took to the skies. But the long lines of lights are only visible shortly after launch. Once the satellites climb to their operating altitude of 340 miles (550 kilometers) they disperse and are far more difficult to differentiate against the backdrop of stars, though a timelapse photograph will pick them out easier.

The megaconstellation developed by the private spaceflight company SpaceX may grow to as many as 42,000 satellites in orbit, according to the science news website NASA Spaceflight. As of May 31, 2023, there are 4,198 Starlink satellites in orbit, of which 3,542 are operational according to astronomer Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who tracks the constellation on his website. Given the high numbers of regular Starlink launches (sometimes multiple times a week), there is ample opportunity to set your sights on catching a glimpse of the infamous "Starlink train".

Officials say estimated arrival times will be generated by averaging travel times of the previous five trains to move along a part of rail track. Customers can get the information by choosing their rail line and then their station.

The South Shore Line has launched a new train tracker that allows users to track train locations in real time. The tracker is available online and the railroad plans to have it on its smartphone app in early summer.

Similar to the CTA's tracking system for buses and trains, Metra's new "Rail-Time Tracker," provides riders with up-to-the-minute train schedule information through Metra's website and select mobile devices. Agency officials said it complements e-alerts already in place.

"Metra will still send e-alerts whenever a train is more than 15 minutes late on weekdays and 30 minutes on weekends," Metra said in a statement. "But the train tracker will let riders know when a train is going to be even a minute late."

Metra has been gradually restoring service that was drastically cut back during the Stay at Home era. For example, the railroad will increase number of weekday trains on SouthWest Service from 12 to 30, starting next Monday.

But Metra reliability appears to have become more of an issue than before COVID. For example, in a December 27 letter to the Chicago Tribune, Glenview resident Linda Bruce said the 6:57 a.m. Milwaukee District North train she takes downtown never shows up on time, sometimes instead arriving in Glenview as late as 7:15. Then one day recently it appeared at 6:57 on the dot. She called it a Christmas miracle.

Indeed, riding Metra to work is a great way to avoid having to worry about traffic jams caused by car drivers. But the replies to the tweet highlighted issues the commuter railroad still needs to address to become a more reliable, convenient, and pleasant alternative to driving. Commenters mentioned infrequent service; delays caused by signal problems and freight train traffic; outdated locomotives and carriages; the need to switch from diesel to electric power systemwide; and more.

Metra's latest effort to win back rider confidence was this week's announcement that the system has launched metratracker.com, "a new real-time train-tracking website that lets customers see precisely where their trains are and when they will reach their stations." (Metra has been tracking trains since 2010.) The new site is also supposed to make it easier to view schedules and plan trips.

The new train tracking system was created by Woodbury, NY-based Clever Devices and cost $26.7 million. It required the installation of new GPS tracking devices and other network equipment on over 1,000 railcars and in 238 stations. Currently the tracker is fully operational on six lines: Metra Electric, Rock Island, Heritage Corridor, North Central Service, Milwaukee District West and Milwaukee District North. The railroad says coverage on the remaining lines, including the three UP lines, SWS, and BNSF, coverage, will increase as it completes the installation of new tracking devices this year.

Metra says the train tracker system has other features that will upgrade communications. For example, employees in the Train Reporting and Customer Communications Center (the facility that handles customer communications) can send texts to trains and platforms that will instantly be turned into audio announcements and displayed on platform signs. The railroad says the system will more accurately announce the arrival of the next train, or announce that the next train is running express, on platforms.

Metra spokesperson Michael Gillis told Streetsblog the data that is being used by metratracker.com is already also being used by the Ventra app and more than 600 third parties that requested and have access to the railroad's GTFS-RT feed, such as the Transit app, Google Maps and Apple Maps.

One thing about having a visual representation of where Metra trains are is that it really highlights how sparse the service is. For example, above is a depiction of the trains on the BNSF Line as I'm typing this, around 12:25 p.m. on a Friday. It's notable that, even on the system's busiest route, only one inbound and one outbound run are visible. A world-class commuter rail system should provide more options for departure times, rather than forcing you to wait an hour or two for the next train if you miss your run.

In addition to editing Streetsblog Chicago, John writes about transportation and other topics for additional local publications. A Chicagoan since 1989, he enjoys exploring the city on foot, bike, bus, and 'L' train.

If your train is delayed or cancelled and you abandon your journey as a result, you can claim a fee-free refund from your point of purchase. If you continued with your journey but were delayed by 15 minutes or more, then you can claim delay compensation via Delay Repay.

There was no organized lesson to go along with this activity, but if your kids are anything like mine there is bound to be lots of pretend play! My boys were making up stories about crossing train tracks and sharing train tracks, as well as observing log and short track marks!

After we were through I thought about how much fun this activity would be to do on a long piece of butcher paper! I think I may have found our next train activity! Until next time, try this one out with your munchkins and share your pictures with me on the Munchkins and Moms Facebook page or tag us on Instagram!) 17dc91bb1f
