Merchants who traveled by foot worked locally, trading goods with the people who lived within a city or local village. The loads that they carried were usually small and were carried on sacks on their backs.

For larger loads, a piece of cloth was wrapped around the goods, and then the ends of the cloth were attached to the merchant's forehead.
