PRIVACY POLICY & PERMISSIONS TRANSPARENCY REPORT
MailTracker – Email Tracking for Gmail
Last Updated: October 2026
================================================================================
1. ARE ALL REQUESTED PERMISSIONS STRICTLY NECESSARY?
================================================================================
YES. MailTracker adheres strictly to the Principle of Least Privilege established by the Google Chrome Web Store Developer Policies. Every permission declared in manifest.json is indispensable for the core functionality of email tracking:
• "storage":
Strictly necessary to save your configuration (such as whether desktop alerts are enabled) and your local tracking activity feed (so you can view your open counts and read timestamps inside the popup). Without this permission, tracking history would reset every time you close your browser.
• "alarms":
Strictly necessary to perform periodic, energy-efficient background checks for status synchronization without keeping a persistent background worker running, saving battery and CPU memory.
• "notifications":
Strictly necessary to alert you via native desktop notifications the exact moment an email is opened. If you prefer not to see notifications, this can be turned off anytime in the extension settings.
• "https://mail.google.com/*" (Host Permission):
Strictly necessary to interact with the Gmail web interface. It allows MailTracker to:
1) Inject the friendly "✓✓ Tracked" toggle button into the Gmail compose toolbar.
2) Display the single (✓) and double (✓✓) green checkmarks beside sent emails in your Gmail inbox and sent lists.
Crucially, MailTracker only requests access to "https://mail.google.com/*" and NEVER requests broad access to all websites (<all_urls>).
NO UNNECESSARY OR HIGH-RISK PERMISSIONS:
MailTracker explicitly DOES NOT request:
✗ "tabs" (no monitoring of browsing activity)
✗ "<all_urls>" or broad web access
✗ "cookies"
✗ "webRequest" / "declarativeNetRequest"
✗ "identity" or Google OAuth tokens
