36inch

THIRTYSIX INCH "NARROW" GAUGE WAS VERY POPULAR WITH AMERICAN RAILROADERS IN THE LAST HALF OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. THE EQUIPMENT IS SMALLER, LESS EXPENSIVE, AND CAN TWIST AND TURN THROUGH MOUNTAIN PASSES AND VALLEYS. THERE ARE SEVERAL EXAMPLES OF "SLIM LINE" RAILS STILL OPERATING IN THE USA. THE LONGEST AND MOST NOTABLE IS THE CUMBRES AND TOLTEC SCENIC RAILROAD BETWEEN CHAMA NEW MEXICO AND ANTONITO COLORADO.

THIS 65 MILE SCENIC RAILROAD WAS SALVAGED AND PRESERVED FROM THE DENVER AND RIO GRANDE NARROW GAUGE OPERATION THROUGHOUT COLORADO AND NEW MEXICO. ALSO A PORTION HAS BEEN PRESERVED BY THE DURANGO SILVERTON RAILROAD.
