Two key events in Nintendo's history occurred in 1979: its American subsidiary was opened in New York City, and a new department focused on arcade game development was created. In 1980, one of the first handheld video game systems, the Game & Watch, was created by Yokoi from the technology used in portable calculators.[5][40] It became one of Nintendo's most successful products, with over 43.4 million units sold worldwide during its production period, and for which 59 games were made in total.[52]

In 2002, the Pokmon Mini was released. Its dimensions were smaller than that of the Game Boy Advance and it weighed 70 grams, making it the smallest video game console in history.[5] Nintendo collaborated with Sega and Namco to develop Triforce, an arcade board to facilitate the conversion of arcade titles to the GameCube.[124] Following the European release of the GameCube in May 2002,[125] Hiroshi Yamauchi announced his resignation as the president of Nintendo, and Satoru Iwata was selected by the company as his successor. Yamauchi would remain as advisor and director of the company until 2005,[126] and he died in 2013.[127] Iwata's appointment as president ended the Yamauchi succession at the helm of the company, a practice that had been in place since its foundation.[128][129]

In 2012 and 2013, two new Nintendo game consoles were introduced: the Wii U, with high-definition graphics and a GamePad controller with near-field communication technology,[153][154] and the Nintendo 2DS, a version of the 3DS that lacks the clamshell design of Nintendo's previous handheld consoles and the stereoscopic effects of the 3DS.[155] With 13.5 million units sold worldwide,[145] the Wii U is the least successful video game console in Nintendo's history.[156] In 2014, a new product line was released consisting of figures of Nintendo characters called amiibos.[5]

Nintendo's first electronic games are arcade games. EVR Race (1975) was the company's first electromechanical game, and Donkey Kong (1981) was the first platform game in history. Since then, both Nintendo and other development companies have produced and distributed an extensive catalog of video games for Nintendo's consoles. Nintendo's games are sold in both removable media formats such as optical disc and cartridge, and online formats which are distributed via services such as the Nintendo eShop and the Nintendo Network.

In 2008, game designer Sid Meier cited the Seal of Quality as one of the three most important innovations in video game history, as it helped set a standard for game quality that protected consumers from shovelware.[326]

I have a philosophical difference with Shigeru Miyamoto, stories matter in games and exponentially increase the enjoyment I get out of them. Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door was the high point of Nintendo IP for me, with clever writing, super memorable and diverse characters, hilarious dialogue and a fun, creative story. What Nintendo-produced games in your opinion have great stories with clever writing and dialogue?

Yeah. With regard to the story, we did a survey over the Super Paper Mario24 game in Club Nintendo25, and not even 1% said the story was interesting. A lot of people said that the Flip26 move for switching between the 3D and 2D dimensions was fun.24. Super Paper Mario: An action-adventure game released for the Wii console in April 2007.

25. Club Nintendo: A free, members-only point service run by Nintendo, begun in Japan in 2003, and 2008 in the US. When members purchase applicable software or game systems, register the serial number on the Internet, and respond to post-game surveys, they earn points and can exchange a corresponding number of points for special, not-for-sale items.

26. Flip: A move that Mario can use to switch between 2D and 3D maps with a single button.

I originally saw it in a way that's similar to Miyamoto-san. Personally I think all we need is to have an objective to win the boss battle at the end of the game. I didn't think we necessarily needed a lengthy story like in an RPG. Instead, we looked at the characteristics of a portable game that can be played little by little in small pieces and packed in lots of little episodes and ideas. I always did like putting in little ideas, so I actually enjoyed it.

If playing on Nintendo Switch Lite, detached Joy-Con controllers are required and sold separately. See Opens in a new windowsupport.nintendo.com/switch/play for details. View game mode compatibility chart.

Remember being obsessed with screen shots of the PS1 original before release. Did end up buying it and played it a fair bit but not far into the story. Maybe on sale one day will give it all another go as an adult lol

I played the demo and basically fell in love with it. I'd played this way back in the day but it's been long enough, and the new version upgraded enough that it's worth a revisit. I barely remember the story anyway...so it might as well be a new experience.

@Zeroo I'd considered that, but it's probably will get a sale way before Super Mario RPG. The Nintendo Pricing politics makes me think there is no sense to wait too much to buy first party games since it's "never" in sale anytime soon. On the other hand, Star Ocean second story probably get a 25% in 3 months or less. Besides I was waiting to buy a NSO ticket to buy Wonder + RPG (my family subscription is about to finish and I was afraid of lose it since I'll probably won't renew and get another group)

I've never been a huge fan of boring classic turn based and also not necessarily very fond of the overly shounen inspired stories and characters, looking at you Tales of series which otherwise ticks all the boxes but when it comes to the story is essentially shounen tropes after shounen tropes. That's why I always liked jrpgs that actually try stuff with their combat system and their narratives and tend to take themselves a bit more or even a lot more seriously in some cases, with their lore story and characters, than the standard shounen fare.

I really wanted to like this game but I felt bored by the second half of it.

I bought it after loving the demo. The art is incredible and the story seemed to have the premises to be epic.

But instead I found it pretty underwhelming. I was able to win any battle by just smashing buttons without any strategy, without any real need to level up.

The story felt rushed too, I didn't get attached to any character, and even after big events that should have some meaning, I felt nothing.

Everything is too accessible, any "hidden secret" is basically shown in the map.

That's a shame, golf story was one of my first switch games back in 2018 (when i was done playing botw) and while the humor and gameplay was mostly on par.. i only probably got halfway thru and never went back, it did get a bit tedious trying to complete objectives to move forward.... hopefully they patch this one up nicely... mario tennis on the gba was a cool concept with it's story mode for a topdown sports title... which is something i enjoyed being reminded of when i played golf story

This truly is a shame. I didn't complete Golf Story, but I really enjoyed what I had played of it, and was pretty happy with the story, performance, and charm. It really does seem like they spread themselves too thin in this one. I don't understand why they didn't just move to a different single sport over trying to encompass a bunch of sports. That was part of Golf Story's charm. It focused specifically on humorous stories surrounding just golf.

Golf Story combines the sheer excitement of golf with a serious story that plays out over eight different courses. Play the story of a golfer who is forced to give up all that he holds dear for one last shot at accomplishing his dreams.

I'm a sucker for a visual novel. If you're unfamiliar, they're like point-and-click adventures that you explore through dialog options; think Dream Daddy and Hatoful Boyfriend. Princess Farmer packs familiar visual novel storytelling and relationship-building into a satisfying and puzzling match-3 game. The world and characters are memorable, adorable, and queer as hell. I mean that in the best way.

Playing a game that centers queer relationships and stories without wallowing in pain and despair is so refreshing. Princess Farmer is a celebration of queerness and queer joy that is so rarely seen in games and is even more rarely the center of the story. That's not to mention how addictive the match-3 gameplay is. It's a brilliant debut from Samobee Games.

Breath of the Wild is a stunning reimagining of The Legend of Zelda series. The linear story of previous Zelda games is gone entirely, replaced by a wide-open world with dungeons and hidden secrets you can tackle as you wish. Breath of the Wild is sometimes more difficult and holds your hand less, but it's amazingly fun to explore Hyrule, and you'll enjoy making mistakes. Did we mention Link can climb any mountain you see in this picture? Read our full review.

The Expansion Pass DLC also adds challenge modes to test your combat skills; Hero's Path Mode, which can track the path you've traveled over up to 200 hours of gameplay; and a ton of new items from the Zelda franchise history that you can discover and wear. It's worth playing this before hopping into Tears of the Kingdom.

Kentucky Route Zero is an adventure game that weaves several individual tales into a rich tapestry as beautiful as it is haunting. Originally released in 2013 as a series of episodes and interludes that were sold individually, the Switch version compiles the entire catalog of Kentucky Route Zero stories into a single volume. It's a game Switch owners have been clamoring for, and it doesn't disappoint. Even though it's a couple of years old, the stories, art, and music feel as fresh and vital as ever. If you're a fan of a slow-burn kind of story, this is one you shouldn't miss.

The Last Story is set mostly in that big, cobblestoned city I was talking about before. It is filled with things to look at, and despite the story not taking the characters very far afield -- nearby islands, a pirate ship, the palace, to wars and to weddings -- they all certainly begin in one place and end in another. You will be introduced to all of the main cast in the first hour, at which point, they're living hand-to-mouth, and have been for some time. They are not volunteering their vulnerabilities in each breath though. They do not resemble your schoolyard chums -- if you want that experience, you can, go buy a copy of Persona 3, it ain't go nowhere. The Last Story's cast is composed of adults. These are folks who are crashing in an inn, getting drunk and doing odd jobs, flirting and fucking, smashing and grabbing, trying to forget their shitty predicament. 2351a5e196
