During this scary time in our world, we can find ourselves in a cycle of anxiety. One thing that can help with this stress is knowing the facts about COVID-19. It is important to stay educated through reputable sources, such as the CDC. Two things are currently known about COVID-19: how it spreads and how we can protect ourselves and the at-risk population.
One of the best things you can do right now to stop the spread of the virus is to prevent exposure to the virus. This is best carried out by self-quarantining. Self-quarantining works because the virus is spread from person to person. It can spread through coughing or sneezing. It can also be spread by spit particles that we expel through talking. These particles can travel 6 feet or more. This is also why social distancing is important: if you are more than 6 to 9 feet away from a person the risk of catching the virus drops significantly. To get the virus, these particles have to go into your eyes, nose or mouth. They can also be inhaled into your lungs. This is how one can become infected.
It is important to know the population that is most at risk for fatality if they catch the virus. This would include people with a weakened immune system, such as people with Lyme diseases or diabetes and people age 45 and higher. There are further steps you can take to protect yourself and loved ones around you, along with self quarantining and social distancing. Some of these tips are
Wash your hands with for 20 seconds or more
Avoid touching your face. This is especially important for your eyes, nose and mouth.
Stay home if you are sick
Cover your coughs and sneezes. Spit particles can travel especially far and fast when you cough or sneeze. Be sure to wash your hands after.
Wear a face mask if you are sick. Even this late in the virus face masks are still available. Check on online sites to avoid going out.
Clean and disinfect surfaces that you touch often
Along with these tips, it is especially important to take a moment to exercise or practice meditation to alleviate stress and anxiety. These are hard times, and it is important to keep you and your family’s mental health in check.
