Mask Mandate Lifted

Until about 1-2 months ago, there was a strict mask mandate on public and private schools and school transportation in Shrewsbury schools. Students, faculty, and guests were expected to properly wear a mask anytime they were inside the school. But recently, this mask mandate in all Shrewsbury schools was removed by the Shrewsbury Board of Health. This includes Shrewsbury Public Schools. Mr. Bazydlo announced the removal of the mask mandate in the middle of fourth period on March 4th. This was effective immediately, and many students chose to take off their masks.
Previously, a strict mask mandate was issued because COVID-19 was considered a lot more dangerous and the vaccines were coming out. However, now it has been decided that a mask mandate is not necessary anymore. This removal of the mandate also occurred in many other states across the country, such as New Jersey, California, and Connecticut, as well as public indoor places such as stores, restaurants, gyms, malls, and event spaces earlier this year.
However, the CDC recommends being a bit more cautious about the pandemic.
"Our hospitalizations are still high, our death rates are still high," says CDC director Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky during a White House COVID-19 response team media briefing. "So … as we are encouraged by the current trends, we are not there yet." The CDC still advises people two years and older who are not up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines to wear a mask while indoors in public.
When asked, "What do you think about the mask mandate and its removal?" Many responded that they would prefer the mask mandate still in place for safety reasons. On the other hand, some also said that they do not think removing the mask mandate was making the situation better or worse.
"Honestly, I don't really mind it. I usually wear my mask, but, I'm fine with it either way, whether it's in place or not." -Anonymous, SHS Student
"I was honestly nervous about it at first and still wore it for a week or so afterwards. I have since stopped wearing it most of the time, except for when I have a cold and don't want to spread germs. I do wish that it was a policy that people would wear them if they have a cold as well. It would just cut down on the spread of all germs, not just Covid." -Anonymous, SHS Teacher
"This is my own personal opinion, but I definitely think that the mask mandate should still be in place. This is because corona did not go away. We are all still in danger and should be taking extra precautions. I just want the best for my child and the others as well." -Anonymous, SHS Parent
"I honestly feel like it would be better if we still had the mask mandate. Of course, they're really annoying and no one likes them. But they are really important for keeping safe during these times, especially since the case numbers aren't going down! However, now that it is removed, I respect everyone's personal decision." -Anonymous SHS Student
No matter our opinion on the mandate, it is crucial that we stay respectful of the choices of others, whether it is to wear a mask or not. We will always hope for the best with our COVID-19 situation and hope that the health officials always make the best decisions.
