Any time between March and June and September through October are good times to visit Istanbul. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for offering comfortable weather and the full range of tourist fun.

"I took your advice and did not buy the tourist pass. And in the end I paid less for the places I visited. It turns out that you do actually need to leave an ID card/passport or similar in the palaces to get a headset. People I talked to in Istanbul who got the headset said it went OK, but I had only my passport and didn't get the headset. You're right, a driver's license or any other card that can be cancelled easily would do the trick.

After doing a bit of research, we settled on a Vodafone SIM. Vodafone only has one option for tourists, which includes 20GB of data, calls and texts, and unlimited access to Whatsapp. We paid 350 TRY (around 19 USD).

This is particularly important in summer, when the touristy parts of the city get extremely crowded. One of the best ways to avoid long waits at landmarks such as Galata Tower is by waking up early and arriving as doors open.

Though I visited the mosque as a tourist, people were very gracious and we always felt welcomed. Even the man supervising the removal of shoes made a little joke and offered my OH 100 camels for me. Luckily, he declined.

U.S. citizens who enter Turkey with a tourist visa obtained at a Turkish Embassy or Consulate or who buy a tourist visa stamp at an airport or other port of entry or who are exempt from getting tourist visas, and who wish to stay in Turkey for tourism purposes longer than 90 days, are able to get a tourist residence permit for a maximum period of six months by scheduling an online appointment for e-residency applications at e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr for Provincial Directorates of Migration Management Offices. The six month residence permit plus the 90-day initial entry permit will allow U.S. citizens to stay legally in Turkey for up to a total of 9 months.

You can exchange currency at popular tourist areas like Sultanahmet, the Grand Bazaar, around Taksim Square and Istiklal Cadessi, etc. Rates are said to be best at the Grand Bazaar and Sultanahmet but the differences may be insignificant.

The next morning I went to the tourist police station. I told him what had happened and the police officer only said that he would contact the owner of the vehicle and talk to him about returning the money.

I hired a guide for a walking tour of the historic center, but he didn't show up. You receive less service than the amount paid at the hotel and they always try to overcharge you. There is a lot of opportunism and exploitation for the tourist.

Thanks for pointing that out Chris. 50TL is indeed on the low side but not out of the question for people traveling on a budget. Current price for a durum is about 15TL and a lahmacun is around 10TL. We avoid overpriced touristy restaurants but 75TL would be a more comfortable number for the average traveler. I'll go ahead and update the guide. Enjoy Turkey!

I am Jewish and felt safe and comfortable the whole time. No issues. The US State Department has issued essentially a world wide alert to exercise more caution due to the situation after the attack. I am traveling in Europe until Nov 20th and am not too concerned but I am trying to be as low profile as I can vis a vi being an American and Jewish, although I am obviously a tourist and have an American accent.

I've been to Istanbul several times. Love the city. Always respected the fact that Istanbul isn't small town USA and behaved accordingly. But I wouldn't plan a trip now. All those wonderful Turks that have been so nice to American tourists are not who will target you ... if anyone does. So how someone "felt" really doesn't matter.

After visiting Istanbul 3 times and living there over a period of a few months, I learnt what to wear in Istanbul as a woman to help me feel more comfortable exploring tourist sites and not stand out as much.

Technically, you can wear whatever you want in Istanbul, there are no rules. But, I think that the Istanbul dress code for tourists is important, especially for women visiting Istanbul alone, to feel more comfortable exploring the city and I will elaborate on what I mean by that more below.

However, if you are visiting places inland, even the popular tourist spot of Cappadocia or more unvisited places like Adana or Uzungol in Trabzon, you will want to dress more conservatively and basically follow this guide on how to dress in Istanbul so you suit the dress code there too.

Hello, I am a citizen of Turkey. There is nothing to be afraid of. Turkey is a modern secular country. Women are free. Let me give you a hint about open dressing. You can travel and dress more comfortably in cities such as istanbul izmir antalta alanya. Turkey is a free country. You only need to pay attention to dressing in holy places such as mosques, churches, synagogues.

Hi there, I'm Taylan, I've been a tour guide for 4 years, mostly on stanbul. I got my degree in tourist guiding from Katip Celebi University. I guide people as they are my friends and family most of the time. I'm kind a highbrow (didn't want to use geek or nerd.. But basically I read a lot..). I custom the tours according to your wishes. Being a guide is my passion. I'm still having the excitement to explore this amazing city. I'm fluent in English, and if you are curious about the city / food / culture / history or anything general I'd like to have you as my guest.

To apply for an e-visa, first go to the official Turkey e-visa website. Make sure your passport has over 6 months validity, fill out your information on the application, pay the fee of $20 (but can depend on what type of tourist visa you want), and you can almost instantaneously download your Turkey visa. Print it off, and have it ready when you land in Istanbul.

I got this question a bunch so I wanted to answer it here. From our experience on Turkey we felt 100% safe in Istanbul and Cappadocia. The media definitely tends to hype things so please do your research properly before jumping to any conclusions. Yes there are parts in Turkey to avoid (close to Syrian borders), but the main tourist cities and towns like Istanbul, Cappadocia, etc are absolutely okay for tourists. In Cappadocia especially we felt so safe everywhere! Istanbul is a big city and like any other city there are neighborhoods you would want to avoid. But the main attractions are all located in great neighborhoods and it felt safe to walk around here everywhere. That being said like any place in the world, its always best to be cautious, aware and street smart about your surroundings.

The city (officially renamed Istanbul after the founding of the Turkish Republic) is liberally scattered with glorious remnants of its long and illustrious history, and the tourist attractions here will impress even the most monument-weary visitor.

If you're planning to see Istanbul's top tourist attractions, the easiest place to base yourself is Sultanahmet (Istanbul's old city district), which is a short stroll from all the city's major historical attractions. The Blue Mosque, Topkap Palace, and the Hagia Sofia (Aya Sofya) are all within a five-minute walk, and many hotels in the area have stellar views of these buildings, as well as out to the Bosphorus from their rooftop terraces. A tram line runs through Sultanahmet, and public transport is plentiful, connecting the district with other tourist attractions farther afield.

First time to visit Istanbul was in 1992 after winning a trip on Wheel of Fortune. We did all the tourist attractions Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Hippodrome, etc. Beautiful city. Walked on the bridge at night. Visited again in 2018 but, things were a little different. It was still an enjoyable visit, delicious food. Took a water taxi and it saved a lot of time getting around the city.

Compared to most western countries, Istanbul is a safe city. Theincidence of violent crime against foreigners is very low and fewvisitors to the city experience any problems. There aresome scams and pickpockets operating (more so in thetourist-heavy areas) so you should exercise usual caution.

Although Euros are accepted at some larger stores and in thetourist areas, it is generally better to trade in the Turkishcurrency - the Turkish Lira. Exchange rates are almost alwaysbetter if your currency exchange is done in Turkey, and a goodstrategy is to take enough local currency for your first day or so,and change the rest once you arrive. Alternatively, there are ATMmachines all over the city, and those with a credit/debit cardshould have few problems accessing money. Read more aboutthe Turkish currency here.

The trip was amazing. Exceeded all my levels of expectations for the price. We upgraded to first class as I am a tall guy and made a big comfortable experience for me personally. The Mercedes Benz Coach was super comfy with great leg room and a bathroom. Turkey had a lot of driving as we covered so much of Turkey. The driver Ecker was a gentleman and a great driver. Our guide Serder was a gentleman too with an ample knowledge of the history and significance of landscape. He was very cleared and soft spoken and enthusiastic in his delivery. He made us feel like family and he attended every need by all tourist keeping balance and punctuality of our schedule. The hotels were very good, modern, cleaned and their staff always friendly. Food was great too. For us the Air balloon ride was a bucket list and it blew our minds. The safety and professional output by the staff and Captain it charmed our nerves and as we flew over the landscape plus the sun rising, wow, tears in our eyes. The photos and memories we created were shared in social media and our friend and family will be calling you and gate 1 travel soon. Looking forward to our next adventure. 17dc91bb1f
