Theme music is a musical composition which is often written specifically for radio programming, television shows, video games, or films and is usually played during the title sequence, opening credits, closing credits, and in some instances at some point during the program.[1] The purpose of a theme song is often similar to that of a leitmotif.

The phrase theme song or signature tune may also be used to refer to a signature song that has become especially associated with a particular performer or dignitary, often used as they make an entrance.

From the 1950s onwards, theme music, and especially theme songs also became a valuable source of additional revenue for Hollywood film studios, many of which launched their own recording arms. This period saw the beginning of more methodical cross-promotion of music and movies.[2] One of the first big successes, which proved very influential, was the theme song for High Noon (1952).[3]

Theme music has been a feature of the majority of television programs since the medium's inception. Programs have used theme music in a large variety of styles, sometimes adapted from existing tunes, and with some composed specifically for the purpose. A few have been released commercially and become popular hits.

Other themes, like the music for The Young and the Restless, Days of Our Lives, and Coronation Street[4] have become iconic mostly due to the shows' respective longevities. Unlike others, these serials have not strayed from the original theme mix much, if at all, allowing them to be known by multiple generations of television viewers.

Most television shows have specific, melodic theme music, even if just a few notes (such as the clip of music that fades in and out in the title sequence for Lost, or the pulsing sound of helicopter blades in the theme music for Airwolf). One exception is 60 Minutes, which features only the ticking hand of a TAG Heuer stopwatch. Another recent exception is Body of Proof which has no theme song, and barely even has a title sequence.

In most television series, the theme song is played during the opening sequence. One exception to this rule is Regular Show, the theme music of which is played only during its ending credits in most episodes. In lieu of its theme music, its opening sequence instead features a tone played on a synthesizer overlaid with a ticking sound effect.

Notable is the theme for the game show The Price Is Right, reimagined as Crystal Waters's "Come On Down" which marked the first time that lyrics were added to The Price Is Right theme song and was the first song based on a television theme song (and the first to come from a game show) to reach number 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart on the week of December 29, 2001.[6][7]

Radio programs with notable theme music include Just a Minute, which uses a high-speed rendition of the Minute Waltz by Frdric Chopin; The Archers, which has Barwick Green; Desert Island Discs which has By the Sleepy Lagoon, and The Rush Limbaugh Show, which uses the instrumental from "My City Was Gone."

In talk radio, a different theme song is often used to introduce each segment, and the music (usually popular music of some sort) will often relate to the topic being discussed. John Batchelor is noted for his use of highly dramatic orchestral scores leading in and out of each segment of his weekly show.

Many video games feature a theme song that is distinctive to the series. A popular one to date is the "Prelude Theme" from the Final Fantasy series, which is played on most, if not all, of the title screens of the original games, most notably Final Fantasy I to Final Fantasy IV. The newer ones also feature the theme, albeit usually modernized, and played during the ending credits.[8][9]

For the composing of the theme song, Ben Bocquelet asked composer Ben Locket to score the original early reel of the show in 2010.[1] Bocquelet sent Locket various production images, and Locket felt the show needed a bright and quirky theme with a good vibe to match the feeling of the colorful art styles. The arrangement was created for the early reel, but was later redone for the opening of the show.

In the United Kingdom and most other parts of the world, the opening theme music and video are played before each airing of The Amazing World of Gumball. The introduction is a disjointed display of various psychedelic images of various inhabitants of the city of Elmore, accompanied by a cheery and bright melody.

In the United States airings of The Amazing World of Gumball, the theme song is shortened to a length of five seconds. A possible reason for this is the American version of Cartoon Network tends to sell as much advertising as possible to maximize profits. This is a common tactic used by American television networks that often precludes full end credits from being shown, often abridging, minimizing, or, in Nickelodeon and the USA's case, showing the credits on the lower left part of the screen as the episode is ending, to the chagrin of many viewers who may miss gags/extra bits during the credits.

The Opening Sequence is traditionally played at the start of every episode of Total Drama. Chris usually recaps the previous episode first, and then the theme song begins. The song title is I Wanna Be Famous, and is performed by Graeme Cornies and Dawna Toews. In Total Drama All-Stars and Total Drama: Pahkitew Island the theme song is shortened and most of the lyrics are cut off under the broadcaster's orders, in order to make the episodes longer. For Total Drama Island (2023), the shortened intro remains, but an updated version of the theme song is displayed.

In Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race, the opening theme starts after Don's recap of the previous episode, similar to Total Drama. The intro, however, is different, being an instrumental instead.

In the Total Drama Island theme song, the song begins with a total of four spotlights and cameras coming out of random places, such as out of the grass or from a tree, the last two knocking down a beaver and a squirrel. Then a clapperboard clamps down, and the camera starts moving through Camp Wawanakwa and past the host of the show, Chris, who is drinking coffee, and commanding the camera crew from a folding chair. It then goes to the top of the cliff and then down it, where Owen is seen in the water, farting and knocking out a fish with the smell. The scene pans over to Bridgette and Geoff, in the lake on Bridgette's surfboard, flirting. However, the smell reaches them, and they look disgusted. As the unconscious fish reach the surface, an eagle flies by and picks it up, dropping it somewhere in the forest, where DJ is seen sitting in the forest with two birds, a chipmunk, a skunk, a frog, two squirrels, a tortoise and a bunny. DJ seems to get along well with them until the dead fish drops right in front of him, startling the animals and causing them to attack him, so DJ screams and runs away. Duncan is seen laughing at DJ's misfortune, until he notices Courtney glaring at him disapprovingly. The camera then goes through the forest to where Heather and Leshawna are seen slap-fighting in a rubber raft that falls off a waterfall, since they were not paying attention. Once they fall by, Harold is seen practicing martial arts moves on a log stretched across a gorge behind the waterfall, up until Izzy, who is swinging on a vine, crashes into him, sending them both flying back into camp, where they crash into the confessional and knock a half-dressed Lindsay out of it, revealing her pink panties.

In the Total Drama Action theme song, the song once again begins with spotlights and cameras appearing out of various places, bringing up a rat from the sewers and knocking a raccoon out of a tree, before a clapperboard clamps down in front of it. The camera then makes its way through the abandoned film lot, where Chris is seen driving a golf cart. The camera goes through some fake prop sets, and then a rack of clothing. It then goes up the replica of the 1,000-foot cliff, and then down into a small pool. Owen is seen swimming in it, with a shark approaching him from behind. However, Owen farts into the shark's mouth, propelling himself away and disgusting the shark, making it cough. The camera then goes up to the beach movie set, where Harold is evading the seagulls that Duncan is shooting at him while he stands on the surfboard. However, one hits him in the face, and he falls off into the pool. Duncan is then seen laughing at Harold's misfortune, with Courtney glaring at him from behind. Duncan then turns around and Courtney and Duncan share a kiss, then grin evilly at each other. The camera passes through them, and by a Sasquatchanakwa wearing a bra and a pink wig to a large metal door opening, revealing a big flash of light. Beth and two more sharks are now seen relaxing on beach chairs on the beach set, wearing sunglasses. The camera zooms in on Beth, who smiles and shows that she is no longer wearing braces.

Just like all the other theme songs, several spotlights and cameras appear out of strange places, then kicking a raccoon from the jet's engine, and then from a suitcase, finishing with a clapperboard clamping down, indicating the start of the episode. The camera then rushes through the Total Drama Jumbo Jet's first class section, through the cockpit, past Chef Hatchet, while Chris jumps out of the way. After flying out of the plane, passing a row of hangars alongside a runway as baggage tractors drive all around, and over the CN Tower, the camera leans down and drops from the sky, passing by a familiar island and landing in a familiar lake. Owen is seen underwater, smiling at a fish. The smile then turns into an embarrassed look as he realizes that he has lost his swimming trunks, therefore covering up his "kiwis". Above the water, Harold is practicing karate moves on top of a hut on a basket canoe, but gets knocked off by an oar thrown at him by Duncan, who is in the same canoe, alongside Courtney, who is also paddling along. Alligators are seen swimming around them, leaping into the air repeatedly as they paddle by. The canoe then paddles off-screen, and the screen briefly shakes, implying a crash. e24fc04721
