Many of my movies/TV have foreign languages thrown in here and there. If I get forced subtitles then it only has them for the foreign parts. If I get just normal English, with no forced, it only gets for the English parts and doesn't cover the foreign parts.

I like foreign TV series, e.g. French, German, Spanish and Portuguese (sorry, have not watched recently increasingly popular Norwegian) and I would like the English subtitles to show up automatically when the series are not British or American.

It shows neither. Since I am used to seeing the embedded ones, I am disappointed to jump up back from sofa to reach the computer and press s in the middle of the dark to enable the English subtitles which are enabled in all possible ways.

Can anyone explain if and how you can play the German version of Enderal on Steam with English subtitles. Asking because my father knows German and I want him to hear what the game sounds like in that language.

I've been watching shows like Terrace House and Erased with Japanese audio and Japanese subtitles to learn via immersion (besides grammar books/anki/kanji of course) but can't help but feel like I'm still learning with English subtitles on, since I'm able to hear the Japanese and read the instant translation.

Before I started learning Japanese, I would only read the English subtitles when watching something. However, when I do so now, I'm connecting the words I'm hearing and the English I'm reading which seems to help me learn and understand much more than Japanese audio and Japanese subtitles.

I just completed the Demo and, apart from the fun I had playing it and the overall beauty of it, I'm a bit concerned about subtitles... At first, I didn't know which language I wanted for voices, so I tried english, japanese, and french (my mothertongue). I ended up liking better English, for several reasons, but still turned on subtitles as I'm not a native speaker and need some help from time to time to understand properly what's being said. And there started some really awkward stuff.

Basically, translations are not good and sloppy, at least in French. I'm not speaking about some nuance lost by translating a word into its "weaker", more neutral version (for example going from "horror" to "fear"), but really completely changing sentences. I guess small spoiler alert ? At some point, one character says "Chin up lad, you're going to be a soldier" in English. In the French subtitles, the translation is different from that. If you translate that specific moment back to English, it goes along the lines of "Stand up, you're going to suffer, I'm telling you that". Which changes completely the meaning and point of the sentence. And this is only one of the several moments I noticed that change. Straight from the very first cinematic where characters discuss, there are moments like that.

I did some testing and from what I've seen, subtitles and voice lines follow the same script, meaning if you put English voices and subtitles, you'll read exactly what you hear. Same goes for French voices and subtitles. So I was wondering if that issue only occurred regarding French translation, or if other languages have noticeable translation issues ?

I have Plex on my Roku 4K and Firestick 4k. When I watch a movie with English audio and say a person speaks another language, there isn't any translation subtitles showing up. Example was I watched Bad Boys For Life and at the beginning the main antagonists are speaking Spanish, but the English translation subtitle didn't show anything. I went to the web app and it shows up. Is there something I need to do to get these type of subtitles to show up when watching through Roku or Firestick? I wish the subtitles would just be burned into the file.

Unlike SDH, subtitles are not created with consideration for sound. As you can imagine that could potentially adversely affect the deaf or hard of hearing viewer experience. Here are some differences:

I just realized that every episode of campaign 2 received (I assume very recently) subtitles in 5 or 6 languages. As a french viewer, I was a bit frustrated that my friends who are not as fluent in english as I am couldn't get into CR because only the first few episodes of each campaign were subtitled in our language.

So I was very happy to see all C2 had subtitles in french, among other languages, but it was kind of a let down to see that it's only a sloppy auto trad through a software or something. I mean, it's not horrible, but I am disapointed that so little care went into it, even if I understand such a task would be long, and maybe expensive if they were to pay a thrid party to make the translation (that's what I was expecting).

Captions (subtitles) are available on videos where the owner has added them, and on some videos where YouTube automatically adds them. You can change the default settings for captions on your computer or mobile device.

As it says in the title just an odd question, there is a French program that I was telling a USA friend about, she said it's a shame my French isn't good enough to be able to watch it. If she is in the Us and can watch on catchup or streaming TV ie filmon or something is there a widget/ app that allows English subtitles? Just a thought.

Most TV remote controls have an audio toggle, which should allow you to switch between the various available audio channels available for any given TV program. The same is true of the subtitle button. Unfortunately, only a few programs on French TV are actually broadcast in more than one language, generally US TV series, and then only at certain times. As to whether or not English subtitles are provided, this has not been, at least in my experience, generally the case for French programs.

Since our French TV reception vanished irretrievably I have forgotten exactly how we did it, but there are quite a few channels that do version multilangue (VM) of a lot of programmes. We used to run through the menu every time as I remember it, because nobody actually remembered precisely how to do it. It is there if you search. It may seem silly, but we used to do it for dubbed originally English programmes to see how the subtitles compared with what we remembered if we had seen it and how they corresponded with the dubbed spoken words. It was often hilarious. For all of that, it is probably a superb aid for people learning French. Given the main channels are available on Filmon, Zattoo and so on I imagine they are there to find.

Traditional ESL classes provide a great foundation for basic vocabulary, grammar, syntax, and other linguistic features of a language. However, watching videos with captions or subtitles over the audio of native speakers is a great way for ESL students to improve vocabulary, pronunciation, and inflection and pick up on more nuanced features of English, such as slang terms, phrases, and colloquialisms.

In 2009, a study conducted with Dutch ELLs concluded that watching English-language video content with English captions led to high scores after testing for aural word recognition, while watching English videos with Dutch subtitles led to lower scores on those tests. This suggests that reinforcing English speech with English text helps ELLs memorize spoken and written words in the language, leading to stronger vocabulary skills.

In 2016, a study conducted with a group of intermediate Spanish students of English as a foreign language watched an episode of a television show in its original English version with English, Spanish, or no subtitles overlaid. Before and after the viewing, participants took a listening and vocabulary test to evaluate their speech perception and vocabulary acquisition in English, plus a final plot comprehension test. The results of the listening skills tests revealed that after watching the English subtitled version, participants improved these skills significantly more than after watching the Spanish subtitled or no-subtitle versions.

If an English word was spoken with a Scottish accent, English subtitles usually told the perceiver what that word was, and hence what its sounds were. This made it easier for the students to tune in to the accent.

It is more likely to see both options on videos that have been dubbed in English. The English subtitles are usually translated from the original audio. But the English Closed Captions are transcribed from the dubbed English audio. Video production is complicated, especially when releasing video on a streaming platform with a global reach. So it makes sense to give audiences as many options as possible for accessibility.

For content creators, if you are planning to release your content to a global audience then subtitles would be a great choice. Subtitles efficiently and accurately translate the speech in a video for audiences abroad.

For viewers, English subtitles are more accurate to the original audio track. For language learners trying to grasp both the written and spoken form of a language, using this subtitle track is best. If staying faithful to the original language is the priority, the translated subtitle track makes sense to use.

To change the default subtitles language in Settings, go to Settings > Video and Audio > Audio > Subtitle Language, then choose the language that you want.
