Dr Tony Murphy is a Chief Research Scientist at CSIRO, Australia’s main government research organisation, where he has worked since 1989. He received BSc(Hons) and PhD degrees from University of Sydney and was a postdoctoral researcher at Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Munich from 1987 to 1989. His research focuses on applications of plasmas, including metal additive manufacturing, plasma catalysis, and hydrogen plasma ironmaking. Dr Murphy has published over 350 papers in refereed journals, with over 16,000 citations and an h-index of 62 in the Web of Science. He has received several awards, most recently the 2024 Plasma Physics Innovation Prize of the European Physical Society, and holds editorial positions with six international journals, including Editor-in-Chief of Plasma Chemistry and Plasma Processing and Associate Editor of Journal of Manufacturing Processes.
