The world of The Wizard of Oz returns to the big screen with the long-anticipated movie version of the award-winning Broadway musical Wicked. As someone who has never actually seen the original musical, I was excited to see just how well the film would be for someone with no prior knowledge of the original. So, without further ado, let’s dive in.

Taking place many years before Dorothy comes to the land of Oz, we become witness to the origin story of The Wicked Witch of the West, whose real name is Elphaba, who is born with odd green skin and is feared and mocked by almost everyone she meets. At a magic school known as Shiz University, Elphaba demonstrates an incredible magical ability and is brought into the school, where she meets Galinda Upland, and the two clash immediately.
The film mainly covers the musical's first act, with the sequel (which will be released later this year) covering the second act. The story is well delivered by the cast and crew and is full of easter eggs for fans of the original Broadway production and newcomers alike. Fans of the original film The Wizard of Oz might also notice some small details hinting at future characters and events.

Of course, music is one of the most important aspects of a musical. I’m pleased to say the soundtrack is phenomenal, with plenty of tracks you’ll be humming to yourself long after the movie ends. My personal favorites include “Loathing” and “Defying Gravity”. One of my main issues with musicals, largely present in Joker: Folie à Deux, is that the music fails to flow with the story naturally and feels out of place. Luckily, that is no issue here, as every song flows smoothly and feels natural with the flow of the story. A few of the singers in the film occasionally feel as though they have a filter going over their voice in a few songs, but it isn’t too prevalent.
The film boasts beautiful visuals and colors that will engage the audience. Many excellent and gorgeous shots will awe and amaze audience members.
Cast
Cast
The film's cast is a star-studded cast full to the brim with talent. Elphaba is played brilliantly by the fantastic Cynthia Erivo, which adds a sympathetic and witty portrayal of the famous Wicked Witch. Joining her is Ariana Grande as Glinda, Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard of Oz, and Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible. Other notable actors include Johnathan Bailey, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, and Andy Nyman.
Verdict
Verdict
Wicked is a wonderful film with addicting songs and amazing performances. It is an amazing and entertaining time for the whole family. The film is available now on digital and DVD.
