Eight years ago, Warner Brothers announced that a movie adaptation of the popular horror video game series Five Nights at Freddy’s would be made. Since that announcement, the movie and its script has been shuffled around from various producers and directors. The franchise has also had multiple game releases, novels, and merchandise. Now, after so long, the movie adaptation of this franchise is finally here. Does it succeed in bringing an interesting horror setting to life, or much like the fictional restaurant, should it have been left to decay?
The movie’s story follows a young, down-on-his-luck man named Mike Schmit, as he tries his best to hold his life together, as well as hold on to his little sister, so as not to lose her. As a last-ditch attempt to hold a steady job, he takes a sketchy offer as a night guard at a decrepit old restaurant called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While working the long hours, he slowly learns that there may be more mystery to the old restaurant with its creepy band of animatronic characters than meets the eye, while realizing that it all may connect to a tragedy that occurred to him many years ago.
The animatronics used in the film are, without a doubt, one of the best highlights in the entire film. They were brilliantly brought to life by the amazing team at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, known for The Muppets, and look exactly like the characters from the first game. The atmosphere, lighting, and sound effects of the film truly elevate the creep factor whenever they appear on screen.
Having very few characters in this movie kept the focus on the most important element, the intriguing storyline. The few who were in the movie did amazing. Some notable performances include Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmit, Matthew Lillard as eerie career counselor Steve Raglan, Elizabeth Lail as Police Officer Vanessa, and young Piper Rubio as Mike’s little sister Abby. Joining the cast are a few cameos from notable Content Creators from YouTube, known for their involvement with the FNaF community. They are welcome surprises and will be recognized by fans of the franchise.
When watching the film, it does a good job of explaining the basic plot of the series to newcomers, while also giving plenty of Easter Eggs and callbacks to moments from the franchise to fans well-versed in the deep and sometimes confusing lore of the games. What it strongly lacks is, unfortunately, the scares. While there are moments I would consider tense and somewhat startling, the overall movie does not have enough truly terrifying moments to warrant being a truly scary movie. Some moments of humor made me chuckle at times, but mostly I was not really afraid of these animatronic threats.
Overall, Five Nights at Freddy's was quite an enjoyable experience. I believe that fans of the franchise will adore this film and its easter eggs while new watchers can have a pleasant first experience of the world of Freddy Fazbear. Knowing that there is a sequel in pre-production gets me excited!
