Evo-Devo (Evolutionary Developmental Biology) explores how changes in genes, genomes, and developmental mechanisms have facilitated the emergence of the remarkable diversity of living organisms.
Our lab uses insect wings as a model to investigate how changes in gene regulatory networks underlying wing development give rise to diverse wing morphologies. Current research focuses include how these networks are modified to produce lineage-specific structures such as beetle elytra; how insect wings, one of the most consequential innovations in animal evolution, emerged; and what rules and constraints govern the evolution of gene regulatory networks.
