Additional information on PDOS

Information and Immigrant Settlement

Authors: Toman Barsbai, Victoria Licuanan, Andreas Steinmayr, Erwin Tiongson, Dean Yang

This page provides all material that was used in the different versions of the pre-departure orientation seminars (PDOS), separately for the new PDOS (treatment group) and the old PDOS (control group).

The new PDOS was developed collaboratively by the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) and our research team. New PDOS topic selection and design drew upon interviews with past and prospective migrants, the International Organization for Migration’s Canadian Orientation Abroad program (www.coa-oce.ca), and input from TIGRA, a U.S. NGO for Filipino immigrants. The new PDOS covers an expanded set of topics beyond the old PDOS related to longer-term socio-economic integration: (i) preparing for departure and entering the US, (ii) getting settled in the US, (iii) building a support network, (iv) finding a job, (v) managing one’s finances, and (vi) maintaining and strengthening ties with the Philippines. Compared to the old PDOS, the new PDOS shifts the focus from topics (i) and (ii) to topics (iii)-(vi). The presentation of the new PDOS lasts longer than the presentation of the old PDOS (2.5 hours vs 1.5 hours). The new PDOS also provides an expanded 114-page paper handbook, which contains comprehensive information as well as links and references to additional information. The handbook allows migrants to look up information when they actually need it, thus lowering the cost of accessing information.
