More about Tom...
Since 1998, Tom has played the lead woodwind chair in the orchestras for The Shaw Festival’s musical productions in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario. This includes many well known shows: “Gypsy”, “My Fair Lady”, “High Society”, “Ragtime”, “Guys And Dolls”, and “Cabaret” to name a few. “Grand Hotel” & “Oh What A Lovely War” in 2018 is his 21st consecutive season. Tom is also the Shaw’s music copyist. He helps prepare the orchestra scores and books for any re-orchestrations in their productions. He has excellent skills at using the music notation software package “Finale”.
Martin Loomer’s “Orange Devils” is one of Tom’s favourite bands in which he is the featured clarinet soloist, as well as honking it out on baritone and alto saxes. On any given gig, Tom might have to be Barney Bigard, Russell Procope, Jimmy Hamilton, Johnny Hodges, or Harry Carney. This 14 piece band re-creates big band swing arrangements of black arrangers of the 1930s and 40s. They play every 2nd Monday of the month at The Monarch Tavern in Toronto, for an open-ended run.
TV and Radio
You’ve probably heard Tom’s woodwinds on a television or radio commercial, and other recordings made by independent artists. He has also recorded many Broadway show soundtracks for the students in the Sheridan College Theatre Programme from which they learn their craft. Recently Sheridan has started to use live music in their productions and Tom played “Hello Dolly” in 2014 and “Damn Yankees” in 2016.
Tom has played in many Toronto productions mounted by Mirvish, Livent and others. Shows have included “Cats”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “Crazy For You”, “Miss Saigon”, “Phantom of the Opera”, “Showboat”, “Bat Out Of Hell” and many more.
Outside of the theatre world, Tom leads his own band, “The Tom Skublics Band”, and plays a variety of styles with several bands in the Greater Toronto Area.
Sharon, Lois and Bram
Tom did a 5 year stint with children’s entertainers “Sharon, Lois and Bram” that included many live concerts, touring all over North America, several recordings, videos and television.
Back in the 1980s when the Royal York Hotel’s Imperial Room had weekly acts come in for dining and dancing, Tom played in the Howard Cable orchestra and had the opportunity to back people like Peggy Lee, Connie Francis, Mel Torme, and Tony Bennett. His favourite gig of all time was 2 weeks in a big band backing none other than Ella Fitzgerald!
